Greetings from sunny and smog-free Northern California and welcome aboard for another season.
First of all, a great big hurrah for SkipKerr, our retired Secretary, who carried the ball so well for six very eventful years. Many thanks, Skip. Your column certainly brought the ties of the '57 family a great deal closer. To the Chief who was at the helm for these same six years, I also say thanks a million for a job so well done ... EdMatthews. Our new head man, Tom Schwarz, I can assure you will be using that old maximum effort to keep those class fires burning at all times. His performance during the years that he was Head Agent can be summed up in two words ... outstanding achievement. Joe Stevenson, the new Head Agent, has already started the wheels turn- ing for the '64 Alumni Fund, so be ready to uphold the excellent '57 records. FrankBruni and Dave Orr round out the new team of officers as Treasurer and Newsletter Editor, respectively.
From the academic world comes news that Ron Chilcote has accepted a faculty position at the University of California at Riverside. Ron completed his doctoral program in Hispanic-American studies this summer at Stanford University. Bill Allison received his degree of doctor of biology in biochemistry at Brandeis in June. In October, Bill will join the Biochemical Research Group headed by Nobel prize winner, Frederick Snager, in Cambridge, England, for further work in biochemistry. The class attorney roster had two more legal tycoons added to its list in June. Ed Clapham received his Bachelor of Laws degree from Ohio State University and John Harper received same from American College in Washington, D. C.
THE MATERNITY WARD: Bobbie andKen Tyson welcomed their first addition to the family August 23 in San Francisco. The newcomer, Laura, threw the happy father into a state of utter confusion which prompted him to buy liquid refreshers for all comers. Ken has started his second year at Hastings Law School in San Francisco. Douglas William became the first boy for Mary and Dick Van Riper when he arrived May 13. Because of a recent promotion with Anaconda American Brass Co., Dick has moved his family to Naugatuck, Conn. Aaron and Judy Daniels became the proud parents of a little "Unski," Gregory Martin, who was born June 13.
Since the last issue of the ALUMNI MAGAZINE, the bachelor status has changed for some of our illustrious holdouts. Jim Parkes joined the newlywed ranks when he married Margaret Barrera in June. Pete Vitella also joined the Wedding March in June when he married Susan Rogers, a graduate of Georgian Court College. After spending the summer working towards his M.A. degree at Temple University, Pete has resumed his work at Rider College where he is an instructor in the English Department. CharlieMaschal and Roberta Gleason joined forces in matrimony last April. Roberta, a 1958 graduate of the University of Michigan, had been working in N.Y.C. Charlie is associated with the Connecticut General Life Insurance Company. Ruth Plant became the wife of Lloyd Weinreb in Dayton on May 5. According to my reports, Lloyd is law clerk to Associate Justice John Harlan of the U.S. Supreme Court. Finally, congratulations to Marty Daniell who married Carolyn Ann Betancourt of Mobile, Ala. They were married June 8 in Mobile. Marty is now the Executive Officer aboard the Coast Guard cutter Blackthorn, stationed in Mobile.
Among those who have traveled some of the more unconventional routes since June 1957 is Harry Tuft who is proprietor of the Denver Folklore Center in Denver, Colo. The center is a unique shop which has an inventory related to folk music and folklore, such as banjos, guitars, mandolins, records, books, etc. Through the combination of the shop, a weekly radio show, and folk music classes, it appears that Harry is creating quite an impact upon potential Denver balladiers.
Dick Newkirk has been appointed cost analyst at Ford Tractor Division of Ford Motor Company. For those of you seeking that "friendly banker," you might look up Joe Malley who has been promoted to the position of assistant cashier at the First New Haven National Bank in New Haven, Conn. Joe and his wife, Dorothy, plus daughter Karen and son Kevin live in Hamden, Conn. After completing his military service, JimTankersley moved to Seattle where he has begun residency in Pediatrics at the University of Washington. Another doctor, BillSpringer, finished his residency at Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital in Hanover in June. Bill is now in the Navy, stationed at Whidberg Island, Oak Harbor, Wash.
For any of you planning to migrate to or visit the San Francisco Bay Area, please give us a call. Diane and I with daughter Julie (13 months) live in Menlo Park which is on the Peninsula, just 25 miles south of San Francisco. Incidentally, I became a commuter recently after joining White, Weld and Co., located in San Francisco.
Once again I urge you potential visitors to let us hear from you when you reach Northern California. There is a fairly sizable Dartmouth contingent living in this area... and we're always anxious to see more fellow alumni.
Secretary, 641 Windsor Drive Menlo Park, Calif.
Treasurer, 71 East Columbus Ave., White Plains, N.Y.
