Welcome aboard! We are officially back in session for the '64-65 year. A new season for news has begun and I am sure that it will be a productive one. While poring over the various tidbits of news that were sent to me over the summer, I have come to the conclusion that good old '57 is no longer an emerging class but rather it is rapidly becoming the Great Class of 19-57. All the news items that have accumulated indicate that '57's are on the move - contributing time and talent to worthy projects apart from daily routines - accepting greater responsibilities in the business and professional worlds - creating and implementing unique ideas with constructive results — assuming a closer and more active association with the College.
To the dear '57 spouses who have forwarded news to this correspondent, I extend to you many, many thanks. Continue the good work because it is most appreciated.
The first and biggest news item on the agenda is something that the whole class has achieved. We have set a record in the 50th Anniversary Alumni Fund campaign. Good old '57 led all classes in total donors with a record 570 participating.
The upshot is this: our performance was superlative and in the future there is no doubt that our past records will be shattered. We're especially grateful to Joe Stevenson and his hard core of agents who so relentlessly stayed on top of the campaign all the way. A great, big hurrah, gentlemen!
The summer was a big one for all the bachelor holdouts who succumbed to the "new way of life." One of the first of the summer candidates to take the vows was Bill Kramer who joined forces with Alicia Ann Dauch of West Hartford, Conn. The bride is a graduate of Connecticut College for Women. Among the ushers was DickBugbee. A few days before the wedding there was a "quiet" stag party with such class notables as Unski Daniels, Bob Rex, Tim Hanley, Art Johnson, Dick Burch, Adam Block, Joe Stevenson, and Tom Schwarz in attendance.
Charlie Nichols and Patricia Clancey were married in July in Beverly, Mass. After soaking up sunshine in the Caribbean on their honeymoon, the newlyweds returned to headquarters in Stamford, Conn. Charlie is associated with P. Ballantine & Sons where he is a special sales representative. Patricia, who received a master's degree at Hunter College, is a computer programmer and systems analyst.
The warm Caribbean waters also lured newlyweds Grenny Bunker and Willa Reinhold during their honeymoon. Grenny and Willa were married in late May and have set up shop on East 70th in New York. AlanDessoff and Loverne Hope Kekst were married in Bethesda, Md., on July 5. Hope attended the University of Chicago. Alan is associated with the Washington Post as assistant city editor.
Fred Kumm and his new bride, Gillian Galvin of Melbourne, Australia, were featured in the Laconia, N. H., Citizen special column entitled "A Wedding of Eminent Interest." It seems that Fred and Gillian's wedding near North Conway must have caused quite a stir among the local townspeople because of the deluge of congratulatory telegrams and phone calls from all corners of the world. Alan Maybee was Fred's best man. Gillian, according to the Citizen article, is a most talented girl. She is bi-lingual, an avid skier and tennis player, champion discus thrower and practices judo - not on Fred, I hope. They are now living in Montreal where he is stationed as a representative for Pfizer International.
By the time this issue reaches you, GeorgeJohnston will have joined the married ranks. George will be married this month to Ann Ritter of New York City. The only bachelor on the West Coast to fall "by the wayside" is Gordy Hally, who became engaged to Judith Jones of San Marino, Calif. Judy attended U.S.C. and the University of Florence, Italy. As I jot down this item, Herb Roskind is probably about to be or just has been married to Laura Cohen of Meriden, Conn. The prospective bride is a 1961 graduate of Connecticut College.
The toddler section is a bit short of news other than one big item: Carl Leonard Liederman raised the Paul Liederman toddler count to two when he was born on June 7. The proud papa has entered his third year of residency in Psychiatry at the U.C.L.A. Neuropsychiatric Institute in Los Angeles.
Moving ahead within the Union Carbide corporate structure is Charlie Schneider who has been transferred from Los Angeles to Pittsburgh.
