Away we go on the home stretch of the 1963 news agenda. With old man Winter knocking at the door, it's time to get those hickories or Heads down from the rafters and prepare for another season on the slopes. We in California have just finished Indian Summer and now look forward to some winter sunshine. You may have heard it never rains here, but as I sit scribbling, the heavens have opened up with some exaggerated evaporation. So much for words from the weatherman ... and on with the news!
Just received word from Ann, Bob Woolman's wife, that they became the proud parents of offspring #l, namely Martha Katherine Woolman. Ann also reported that Bob is director of the Office of Submitted Ideas at Eastman Kodak in Rochester. During the past summer Bob capitalized on his sailing skills by capturing the Central New York District Championship of the Lightning class, plus first place in five other regional sailing regattas. Good show!
From the world of music comes good news. Erich Kunzel has been studying in England during the past three months under the famous conductor, Pierre Monteux. Erich has been assisting Monteux with the London Symphony Orchestra, both in London and on tour. Upon his return to the U.S., Erich will resume his dual responsibilities as assistant conductor of the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra and as an Assistant Professor of Music at Brown.
Among those climbing the corporate ladders is Rodney Dubois who has been appointed senior staff assistant in Socony Mobil Oil Company's Market Development Department. Rod and his spouse, Elizabeth, have two daughters and reside in New York City. The Southern New England Telephone Company recently announced the promotion of Ed Mayhew to sales manager in the company's West Hartford office. Ed should be considered a veteran in the company's ranks, because he has been associated with same since 1957 when he finished at Tuck School. According to a note from Joel Mitchell, the latest rage in New York City seems to be a relatively new "pub" on Second Avenue. Entrepreneur Bob Sproull, the proprietor of this "oasis" on Second, opened the doors of his "Red Onion" last August. Suggest that any '57 visiting firemen in the Big City stop at Bob's Onion for a brew or so.
Globetrotter Rodney Hinkle has returned to the U.S. from Tanganyika where he was teaching in the Mzumbe Government School for Boys. Rod went to Africa under the auspices of the Agency for International Development. He is presently at Columbia University. The Chicago bureau of News-week has added new talent to its roster. Bob Young joined the bureau in July and is now working on Midwestern assignments for the periodical. Another '57 journalist, Dick Duncan, also resides in Chicago where he is working for Bob's erstwhile competitor, Time, Inc.
In October, Hope and Skip Kerr announced the arrival of Linda Kerr who represents their latest contribution to the soaring Texas population. Skip was also happy to report that another '57, Dr. Larry Lubow, has settled at least temporarily in the Austin area. Larry is stationed at Bergstrom A.F.B. Nick Tschetter began private practice in pediatrics in Denver this fall. After completing Medical School at Colorado University, Nick spent his internship at Denver General and his residency at Colorado General. The Tschetter family complement now includes three boys who should be in training for those nearby ski slopes. From Wheaton College in Norton, Mass., comes the news that Tony Dingman was appointed full-time director of dramatics. Tony's background and experience certainly qualified him for the job. Among other activities, Tony has been a stage manager at Dartmouth, the Caravan Theatre in Dorset, Vt, and at Boston University. He has also directed plays at Wesleyan, Yale, and Boston Universities and has had acting roles in numerous summer stock productions.
That's it for '63. I'll be with you all in '64 with more chatter from the grapevine. In the meantime, have a happy holiday season!
