Superb weather, glorious fall foliage and a fine turn-out did full justice to our Interim Reunion the first weekend in October. The Committee of Johnny Mullin, Charlie Comiskey, Hal Davison and Norvie Mihnore did a masterful job in making all arrangements click and a good time was had by all. The social hour and buffet dinner Friday night in Hopkins Center Alumni Hall was highlighted by large screen color pictures of previous gatherings by Dick Wyman and by college movies of 1962 football and other athletics. Saturday brought reuning groups together during the day and a guided tour of Hopkins Center. 1915's open house in Room 117 at the Inn did yeoman service with oodles of sweet cider and luscious apples provided with the compliments of the Bud Does direct from their famous Hawkin's Orchards - plus radio reception of the Dartmouth-Penn game at Philadelphia, as well as the World Series from Los Angeles. The social hour and dinner in Alumni Hall Saturday night was a great topper-offer, highlighted by the inimitable humor of Allen Foley '20 in his speech on Vermont philosophy and folklore, and further enlivened by Charlie Comiskey's rendition of messages from various and sundry Classmates who were with us in spirit, if not in person. Charlie was in good voice and left us all in a condition bordering on hysterics. During the dinner, accolades were handed to Helen Rose and Helen Lounsberry for their part in the Interim's arrangements. Sunday's Brunch was well attended and wound up the scheduled activities. Many paid in-between visits to Charlie and SusanGriffith at their Norwich home and found them both in fine fettle, with Carl Gish in charge of pouring. Among other gatherings was one which gave some of us the opportunity to get acquainted with Ruth (Mrs.Pete) Winship's family at her son Addison's Hanover home. Total registration at the Interim added up to 85 Classmates, wives, and widows - good evidence of 1915's solidarity. A list of those present will appear in a coming issue of the FRONTIERSMAN.
A gala birthday party was thrown in Winchester back in September for KikeRichardson. Eben Clough reports that Kike took everything in stride, including the Sauterne, musical birthday cake, champagne, and a snazzy Borsalino - which should fix him up for another year. The Cloughs took in the first football game of the year at Hanover and indoctrinated some Lynnfield friends into the wiles of a picnic lunch down by the river, as well as their first chance to "see some real class when it comes to a real College." The Don Benninks paid a Saturday visit to the Cloughs' "Wee Too" nest in Ipswich late in September and great was the gab-fest that followed the grub. Don is still busy at his law business daily and Fannie keeps in step as president of the Lawrence Garden Club while also presidenting the Women's Republican Club in that area. It is reported that Nut Norwood and Chink Chamberlain are weekly visitors at Purcell's Eatery in Boston and Sid Crawford was invited to try the new swimming pool in Hanover, provided he wore a bikini. Our rambling reporter ran into Jim Cavanaugh in Manchester and says he's "Ramblin right along with Romney and his Ramblers" and sent his regards. Glad to know he's "in the Pink." Chan and DotFoster were flying to Puerto Rico for the opening of the new Sheraton Hotel there late in October and I understood Dot has been gathering a lot of honors in the field of Bridge lately. The Cloughs were guested at Exeter Academy in mid-October and saw the home team beat Mt. Hermon in football. Eben also got tangled up with some old war buddies at the Topsham Fair in Maine and was among those extolled by the governor for trying to save the country way back - which Eben describes thusly: "It's fair weather when we'uns get together the hosses raced, we bet on 'em and took in the girly shows at nite, had some cotton candy, 2 bags of peanuts and 3 bottles of beer too." It is understood Boston had a couple of distinguished visitors from Texas around Harvard game time — El Paso's Deputy Sheriff. Herb Potter, and Lindon J. (What a combination to invade Boston!) Anyway, the effect was not good — at the Stadium! The Kike n' Pearl Brunch party was on tap as usual before the game, with all the smiles, pretty flowers, handsome girls, food galore, and other fixin's that have made this affair a standout down through the years. Sorry this Scribe had to miss it!
We are all saddened by the passing of JimSisk. A jolly good fellow and a credit to the Class, Jim brightened the lives of many of us. We extend our deep sympathy to his family.
Dale Barker says he finally caught up with Adam Sutcliffe at his home in Rhode Island along in August. Adam has retired, accumulated some extra poundage and is hopeful of getting back into something - having joined the R.R.'s - restless retirees. The Barkers also paid a delayed visit to Deer Isle, Me., and found Duze and HelenLounsberry and Peg Hill in fine fettle. After scanning Johnny Mullin's travel itinerary for July and August, Dale wonders if such is cheaper than paying rent —if so, he's interested!
Dick and Adalene Wyman celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary September 24 in Hamilton, Bermuda. (Can any other '15ers match this?) Dick avers they went there to practice up for the Interim - which, thankfully, they made OK and to which we at the Reunion can testify with gusto. Dick's screen pictures in color are a real treat.
"Pete" Pray-phones in an interesting account of their two months' trip abroad, particularly the warm welcome at son's home in Paris where the wife's relatives rolled out the red carpet in true French fashion. Pete attended the Dart-Penn game with Moose Englehorn '14 and their not too exuberant optimism would appear to have presaged the later events at Harvard.
Carl Whitely comes up with one for the books — he picked the Dodgers in four straight and didn't have a nickel on the outcome! Says his phone rang steady for two days! No justice - eh, Carl?
And Howie Stearns is convinced that Sir Isaac Newton's concept for time as flowing uniformly is wrong! "It just isn't a year since my last birthday" — and he quotes a formula "delta t = f(1/A)" which (he says) means "time intervals decrease as age increases according to some function of A(age)." I pass that one - but I think he's right!
MERRY CHRISTMAS - everyone!
