From Bill Carter came this "Dear Sherm" bombshell, dated January 21: "I herewith tender my resignation as secretary to the class of 1920. It has been an honor to serve my class in this capacity."

Whether for more freedom or from some loss of zip, Bill does not say. For 11 years he has carried on faithfully, with distinction and with pride.

Christmas at 4 Norwich Meadows was made happy and bright with the arrival of Doug Carter '49 and Terry from Reston, Va. Add three of four grandchildren, with spouses. As appetizers, skiing for the younger Carters cross-country, Dartmouth Skiway, and Loon Mountain.

As easilly and smoothly as skiers descending Loon, at a Hanover Inn luncheon President Sherm Adams worked me into Bill's old job, with neither assent or dissent from me.

It's the time of dirty snowbanks, so high that mailboxes and power poles are safe from befuddled drivers. The advancing sun, when it shines, sends its darts into icy driveways. But for all its share of cold and snow, Hanover in j this 43-degree latitude has escaped the misfortunes of the Great Plains, the Northwest, and other areas.

Our Greensboro Road, that once knew hikers to Moose Mountain and the "Eeelite" (Elite Cafe in Lebanon), now has its joggers and cross-country runners.

Honorary chairman of Riverview Hospital in Red Bank, N.J., and still in the fuel business, Jim Parkes of Rumson is as proud of his grands and great-grands as anyone can be. Son Jim Parkes II '57 is an orthopedic surgeon at Roose- velt Hospital in New York and also is team physician to the Mets.

Anne M. Mack, attorney, of 376 Girard Avenue, East Aurora, N.Y., was the stubborn daughter of a stubborn father, a man who didn't believe that women needed a college education (nevertheless taking pride in Anne's good work at Boston University). Anne and Sel Mack were married after his Dartmouth graduation. When Sel died in 195 1, Anne set law as her goal. Graduating from the University of Buffalo Law School in 1955 and passing the bar exam, she settled down in East Aurora, at that time the only Portia in the Buffalo area.

Now for the rest of the story. On February 5 and 6, to honor her 80th birthday, Anne's five children and ten grands attended a celebration at the First Presbyterian Church, along with a host of friends. Belated '2O best wishes to you, Anne.

As busy as Hazel Macomber is helping me with the newsletter, working as newly-appointed corresponding secretary, and AlumniFunding among the widows she did find time for three weeks' R&R on Longboat Key, near Sarasota.

Gugger Fiske, Seminole, Fla., Babson College '23, attended Babson's 50th anniversary celebration in 1981 as one of its oldest alumni.

Our sympathy to Margaret Stevens (136 Whispering Sands Circle, Siesta Key, Fla.) on the loss of her husband, Charles Stevens, January 9. A talented man to whom no obit can do justice.

Undercutting my column allowance of 600 words, I hope that I don't commit too many "egregious mistakes" - William Safire's other term for "boo-boos." Adieu, mes amis.
