Down by the Connecticut River there is a man with a note of optimism in his voice. For the first time in recent years, this could be a crew which will hold its own against the best. Coach Pete Gardner will have a varsity eight which averages 195 pounds per man and stands six foot three inches tall - a solid crew. In addition, when it reaches full strength, it will be Coach Gardner's most experienced.
Three key men, however, are missing until mid-May. Bob Brayton and Dan Watts are both at the Pan-American Games and Steve Mueller, a two-year letterman, will be out with a broken foot until at least May 1. All three rowed on the varsity in 1962 and can be expected to make a strong bid for their former seats.
At present, the varsity boat which will try for the Atalanta Cup against Brown and Boston University on April 20 looks like this. Bob Field, a junior, is in the bow for the second year, John McLaughlin, another junior, is at number two, and Roger Adelman, a senior, has moved up from the JV boat to the number three position.
In the middle of the boat Herb Good-rich holds the number four seat, the same position he rowed on the JVs, Bob Baxley returns to fill the number five spot, Dick Briggs, after an absence of one year, is back at number six, and Bob Henderson, a JV rower in '62, is at seven. Briggs was a letter-winner in '60 and '61. The stroke and captain is Joe Gadd, who for two years stroked the JVs. The cox is senior Bill Subin.
