JUNE 1963 JOHN E. FULLER, TOWNES M. HARRIS JR.

Only one month left for the '63 Alumni Fund Drive so if you haven't, do.

Actually, if all of our class were as energetic as the Assistant Class Agent, ErnieCaster, we would be over the top by now. Ernie who is associated with one of the local reserve submarine units as a Lieutenant Commander in Providence, R. 1., picked up the information that the "U.S.S. Corporal" (55346) was coming to Providence and would be open for inspection to the public. With Ernie's inside information he knew that the Skipper of said submarine, Lieutenant Commander Stephen J. O'Leary Jr. would be ripe for an approach on the Alumni Fund so he and Townes Harris put in an appearance. A picture was taken in the conning tower of the Corporal and the smiles on everyone's face indicates success. Townes revealed that he is sure the tower was aptly named since they did con Steve into a generous donation. All of which is grossly unfair to Steve who is a regular and generous contributor to the Fund.

While still on the Alumni Fund, we picked up a very interesting press clipping from the Journal of Canton, Mass., which only illustrates the lengths that Townes Harris will go to to get publicity.

"Mr. Eugene DeFelice, of 1 Shawnlee Way, Canton, has been named Assistant Agent for his class at Dartmouth College, as well as an Executive Committeeman. Mr. DeFelice will attend the Dartmouth Alumni to be held at the University Club in Boston, on April 4, to assist in formulating plans for their forthcoming fund drive." Knowing the great job that Gene does, not only on the Alumni Fund but other class activities as well, we think he deserves public recognition even if it only announces his evening meal plans.

A list should be compiled of classmates in politics since we seem to be building quite a stable. Francis X. Mahoney, 6 Pleasant Street, Sharon, Mass., was named Chairman of the Board of Selectmen. Having been a selectman for three years, Frank has worked on such committees as the school building expansion program, the municipal building study committee and the municipal building committee. This is not Frank's only interest in civic affairs as he has been connected with the Boy Scouts, Red Feather chairman in 1956, former Veteran Agent for Sharon, and past President of the Parent-Teachers Assoc. in Sharon. After teaching math in the Sharon public, schools for several years, Frank joined the Ginn Company as a sales representative in 1953, after graduating from Dartmouth, Boston University and Northeastern University!

The following is quoted from a recent newspaper article from Grand Forks, N. D.: "A newspaper official and farmer were rewarded with special recognition by the Junior Chamber of Commerce here for their community service. Ralph S. Roth, general manager of Grand Forks Herald, was named outstanding young man of Grand Forks and was recipient of the 'Distinguished Service Award.'"

Kent Maclean White has just been named a general partner with Putnam and Company, Investment Bankers. Kent has served as the branch manager of the West Hartford office for two years, having been with the firm since 1958. After going to Dartmouth and Northwestern, Kent worked for SearsRoebuck before joining Putnam. He is a Deacon for the Unity Church of Christ, West Hartford, Conn. The combination of being a Deacon and being a general partner in an investment house would indicate that Putnam should be a pretty safe place to put a spare buck.

The law firm of Marsh, Day and Calhoun of Bridgeport, Conn., is probably hung with crepe at this point since one of their partners, H. Mefford Runyon has just withdrawn to form his own law firm, Williams, Smith & Runyon. Those of you who have been violating Connecticut law (and there is one law in Connecticut that gets violated frequently) will find his offices in the Court Exchange Building, 211 State Street, Bridgeport, Conn. Mefiord served three years in submarines and got his law degree from Cornell in 1952. He was a member of PSI U and Dragon at Dartmouth. He belongs to the Bridgeport, Conn., and American Bar Association and is also admitted to practice before the U.S. Federal District Court of Connecticut. He is a member of the Trinity Episcopal Church of Southport and formerly president of the Bridgeport branch of the American Cancer Society now serving on the Board of Trustees. He has also served as civil defense director for the Town of Fairfield from 1959 to 1962, before shifting from war to peace and becoming an officer and director of the Fairfield County SymSociety. With all of these outside ac- tivities we are also delighted to say that he and his wife Joan are the proud parents of five children.

Isaacson's Department Store in Ansonia, Conn., has just opened a new ultra-modern store with the help of Ralph DeFonce. Ralph joined the firm in 1962 and brought with him many years of experience in the retail field, particularly its most modern methods of operating. He had a major part in planning the new store which will be the larsest in Ansonia. 6

The magazine Nation's Business" has un- loosed Paul Spiers from the Nation to New tngland. Formerly of Mac Lean, Va., he and his wife, Ann, have two children, Paul III and Suzanne. Paul graduated from Boston University's School of Journalism and went on to Brown Uni. versity for two years. He also worked for toe Providence Journal, Holyoke Transcririt Telegram, Bangor Daily News before gcinp with Nation's Business.
