It seems like the summers get shorter every year and it's hard to believe that fall is already here. I hope the summer proved pleasant and profitable for all of you and that the fall will be even better. For those living in the East or planning a visit this way, our Class has two social events on tap. There will be a combined party with the Class of '52 after the Yale game. For those going to the Princeton game in Hanover, there will be a "cash bar" cocktail party at the Dartmouth Outing Club after the game. Arid as usual, there will be a party after the Harvard game. Details will be in our Class Newsletter.
The big news around New York this summer was the engagement of our Class Chairman, Fred Whittemore to Miss Marion Willi. Marion is a graduate of Wheaton College and no stranger to Dartmouth. Her father and brother are both alumni of the "Big Green." One pleasing by-product of their engagement party was the opportunity to see Kisuk Cheung and his lovely wife, Kyong-Li. They were vacationing in the United States and came into New York just in time for the party. Kisuk and Kyong-Li live in Toyko where he is with the U.S. Army Engineers.
It wasn't very long ago that 118 East 61st Street in New York was literally full of '53 bachelors. In addition to Fred Whittemore, the last couple of years have seen John Corcoran, John Kingsland, Bob Lonsbury, and Bob Douglass fall under the ax of matrimony. Things got so bad that the survivors, Paul Paganucci and Bob Callender, had to move into smaller quarters. To make things even worse, they couldn't find another Dartmouth bachelor to take Fred's place and had to settle for a Harvard man.
The ranks are also thinning on the West coast. Fred Carleton was scheduled for marriage to Miss Mary Ann (Mollie) Settle of Fox Chapel, Pa., on September 13. Mollie graduated from Skidmore in 1962 and has been working at the Stanford University Medical School in Palo Alto. Fred is computer sales manager of the Pacific Division of Monroe International Company and is living in San Francisco. We hope that marriage won't stop his frequent trips East and we look forward to meeting his wife.
It was a busy summer for other '53 bachelors. John Sargent became engaged to Miss Dezija Blumit of Wollaston, Mass., a graduate of Simmons College. Tom Hartshorn's engagement to Miss Mary-Alice Hoxie Peirce was announced. She's a graduate of Vassar and was recently a recreation coordinator at the Children's Hospital Medical Center in Boston. And last, but not least, is the engagement of Dick Beatty to Miss Nancy Lyn Fletcher, a student at Radcliffe College. An October wedding is planned.
From marriages to babies: Dick Cahn celebrated the birth of his first child, a son, Michael Jonathan on August 16. Dick also reports that he is an attorney and engaged in private practice with his father in Huntington, N.Y. My wife, Michelle, and I also had the good fortune of having a son, Robert Pearce, born on August 9, just missing Michelle's birthday by five minutes.
Last spring we reported on several '53's who were active in politics. A recent clipping from the Washington Star advises us that another classmate is tossing his hat into the political ring. Chad Day is planning to run for Congress in the 9th Congressional District of Boston as an independent. He will oppose the Speaker of the House, John McCormack. Chad has been very active in civil rights activities these past few years and is one of the best known leaders in the Boston area. Also announcing his candidacy is Billy Johnson of Hanover. Bill is running under the Republican banner for the New Hampshire State Senate.
Dave Donovan received a master's degree in Business Administration at the University of Connecticut. He was one of the two top students and received the Wall Street Journal Student Achievement Award. ChuckKettering was elected to the Board of Trustees at Northfield and Mount Hermon Schools.
In the business world Bob Scheuer has been appointed assistant vice president of Alexander Wolf & Co., Inc. Bob joined this firm at its formation earlier this year. George Sarner has been admitted as a general partner of G. C. Haas & Co., members of the New York Stock Exchange. George has been with the firm since 1958. BobMichael was recently promoted by The New York Port Authority to the position of Assistant to the Manager of Plant and Structures at John F. Kennedy International Airport. Pat Dudensing has been appointed advertising manager at Ocean Spray Cranberries, Inc. after being an account executive with Young and Rubicam.
We hope to see many of you at some of the Dartmouth football games this fall and in the meantime will look forward to hearing from you.
