For those of you who think that the class of 1946 is getting old, I have an amazing, though disappointing, contradictory statement to report. Football tickets for the Princeton game have just been released and it seems that we are still so young that we do not even rate reserved seats. All of these literally priceless ducats were sold out by the time they reached the old class of 1943. From the class of 1944 on, rush seats are the order of the day. Our enterprising class chairman. Jack Whitman, is in Hanover for a week's vacation and will do his best to correct the situation, but we cannot be too hopeful. The moral of this story is - don't apologize for old age. We are younger than we think.
Ken Fulton, obliging as ever, is the kind of fellow who makes a class reporter's job much easier. Since taking over this little chore. Ken has received several promotions and made a couple of moves and thereby keeps his name in print and my job easier. Two years ago Ken was president of a soap and detergent company in Massachusetts. When this company was acquired by a midwestern starch manufacturer he joined the parent company as vice president of sales. In 1962 he left this industry and joined the Post Division of General Foods in the marketing division. In April '63 he was made district sales manager in Washington, D. C., and in December was advanced to the position of eastern regional sales manager of the Post Division. Congratulations, Ken, and keep up the good work. How about getting another promotion around April or May - the news usually is light around this time and we have to come up with something.
Turning to the prettier side of our class, a '46 wife hit the news in July of this year. Bill Grant's wife, Joan, having found that hammering metals is more socially acceptable than pounding people, has made quite a reputation in the field of hand-wrought pewter. Joan first became interested in metal work (she also works with silver and copper) through the New Hampshire Arts and Crafts while Bill, now chairman of the Biology Dept. of Williams College, was associated with Dartmouth. She has given a course in metal work at the college and this year opened it to the public. Joan and Bill, who, incidentally, collects and makes miniature military figures, have a unique set-up of "his and hers" workshops in the basement of their home.
Another '46 has hit the headlines as one of the top men in his field. Don Hutchinson, who started at Dartmouth and then continued his medical work at Princeton and Columbia, has recently been appointed chairman of the department of obstetrics at the University of Pittsburgh Medical School. I am not familiar with the hierarchy in the medical teaching profession but understand from several doctor friends that this is quite a plum. Congratulations, Hutch. Though yours truly, having sired four daughters, does not consider himself to be a candidate for your services, I am sure that there are many in our elite age group who are still in that category.
Speaking of obstetrics, we have a report on Don Smith who is the proud father of eight children; in addition to which he is a successful lawyer and member of the firm of Warner, Stackpole, Stetson and Bradlee in Boston. Don has just been named as Advanced Gifts Chairman for the city of Hingham, Mass. He was a pilot during his three years' service in the U. S. Air Force and later received his law degree at Harvard. Another man who is active in community affairs in Massachusetts is Roger Butler who was recently named chairman of the arthritis campaign in Westfield. Mass. Roger graduated from Tuck School and now owns the Butler Insurance Agency. He previously served as vice president of the Westfield Chamber of Commerce, and was president of the Westfield Development Corporation.
Stan Feldberg is another man who makes my job easy by continually opening new Zayre stores. He recently opened a new one in Cincinnati and predicts that they will be operating 68 stores by the end of this year. He certainly has maintained a fast pace, having opened 35 new stores in the last two years. Keeping a close touch on this entire operation which does more than 120 million dollars annually must keep Mr. Feldberg very busy indeed.
Larry Jaffe has announced the formation of a new marketing research company, Laurence J. Jaffe Associates, Inc. located in New York City. Larry is a veteran in the research field, having held high positions in several other firms prior to starting his new company. We have also received an interesting article regarding Al Duke and describing his athletic successes at Swarthmore and Dartmouth before enrolling at Tuck School. Al is now secretary and treasurer of the Sanitary Supply Company of Avon. He and Jean and their two daughters live in Rumson where he sports a nine handicap at the country club.
Seems that the news is light this month so we'll have to cut it short. We're sure hoping to see many of you in Hanover during the football season. Best regards from the hills.
