Only three home football games this season but we have had fun with returning Greens, both in and out of the great class of 1946. At the Penn game we talked with John and Edie McClintock and their three children at Dartmouth Night in Leverone Field House. It was good to see them, as well as Jack and Jean Whitman and Frankand Pat Ettari, all of whom spent some time at 33 South Park. Tom and Emelie Adams were in town Friday night and for the game on Saturday but had to leave shortly thereafter.
Two more big ones, with Cornell in Hanover and I hope to see a lot of you rooters there. It's a great place to come for relaxation and fun - why don't more of you try it. Catching up on recent news, received a nice letter from Bill De Stefano who recently completed his annual reserve tour at Newport, R. I., where he met Leo Warring, now skipper of the "USS Rush" (DD-714). Leo has remained in the Navy since receiving his commission at Dartmouth in June of 1946 and has had a distinguished career since that time. His commands have included an LST and LCI, tours on two destroyers before assuming command of "USS The Sullivans" and now the "USS Rush." Leo and Shirley live in Middletown, R. I., with their two children.
Former FBI agent Paul Breslin has been named general securities supervisor for the New England Telephone Company. After completing his service as a Marine Corps Lieutenant, Paul joined the FBI as a special agent covering New York and later the mid-western states. He left this exciting work in 1961 to join the telephone company and in his new position will be responsible for coordinating company efforts to prevent fraud and theft. I am sure that Frances and his three children are pleased to have him home more often.
A recent news clipping notes that BudScheu, formerly a key executive with the Thomas Lipton Company, has recently become president and chief executive officer of Atkins and Merrill, Inc., an affiliate of the Roxbury Carpet Company. No further information on this move but would appreciate hearing more. On the political front Frank Guarini, a lawyer and very active participant in civic affairs in Jersey City, is running for Senator in New Jersey. Frank is following in his dad's footsteps in this pursuit and we wish him all the best of luck. Malcolm McLane is running for reelection as Alderman in Concord, N. H., having held this post since 1955. Mai is a member of the Orr and Reno law firm and resides with Susan and their five children in this city. We certainly would like to know the results of these elections.
A long and interesting article describes the exploits and accomplishments of JohnSirignano, our war-blinded classmate who has done such a great job since graduation. Entering Yale Law School after Hanover, he passed the bar exams in seven years and practiced law in Brooklyn. In 1955 he joined the staff of the General Counsel of the Department of Health, Education and Welfare, moved to the Justice Department in 1957, and in 1960 transferred to the New York office of the Anti-trust Division. Recently, John was honored for sustained superior performance by Attorney General Nicholas Katzenbach and I know that all of his classmates join in applauding this great achievement.
Back to industry, Bob Hodes has been elected to the board of Leasco Data Processing Corporation. Bob, a graduate of the Harvard Law School after Dartmouth, is a partner in a New York law firm and is a board member of a long list of companies too numerous to list here. In addition, he is very active in civic affairs both in New York and on Long Island. Spence Smith, formerly pulp sales manager of the Weyerhaeuser Company, has recently been named vice president and pulp sales manager of the Domtar Ltd. in Montreal. This news also comes from a clipping and I am not sure whether or not the two companies are inter-related. How about filling us in, Spence.
Reflecting on some of the barren news months last year, it is surprising but pleasant to realize that I have a few more clippings and news items but no space left in the column this month. We'll make sure they hit the next column but, in the meantime, keep me in a surplus position. Isn't it nice to see your friends' names in print?
Best regards from the hills.
