Right at the start, some congratulations are in order for Gerry Ashworth's gold medal and world record-helping leg of the 400-meter relay at the Tokyo Olympics. He ran the second leg of that really thrilling race. I think he's the first alumnus to win an Olympic Gold Medal. And, some bad news with the good - in the In Memoriam section of this or a subsequent issue of the MAGAZINE will be found the obituary for James Wilhelm who was killed in an automobile accident in Vermont. He was driving on that return milk-run from Smith that so many of us have taken. I won't dwell on this tragedy in this column; I mention it in my obituary. All that can be said here is that our class expresses its sympathy to Jim's parents and family; an accident like this brings too many near-misses to our minds.
A few letters: one from Bob Burgess, living on Dauntless Lane in Hartford. Bob let us in on news of the birth of his son - Bruce Robert. Wife Judi stopped teaching while taking care of Bruce, who was 6 pounds, 6 ounces at birth. All in the Burgess clan are fine; Bob's still with Connecticut General and enjoys his work. He tells me that Pete Andre manages to break away from math at Yale to stop in at Dauntless Lane (can't get over the name of that street).
A really unexpected and much appreciated letter came the other day from Saigon and Sturges Dorrance. He and wife Pam are parents of a daughter — Elizabeth Kilty, but Sturge hasn't seen too much of his daughter since his Vietnam stretch. He's Station Manager and Assistant Officer in Charge of the Armed Forces Radio Station (you'll remember that Sturge held a similar post with WDCR) and has been in Saigon since last June. He'll be there about another year. Interestingly, Sturge writes that he'd rather be in Vietnam than any other "hardship" area. "At least, there is something going on here." There sure is ... I hope not any closer to Saigon than the reports we get now. If there are any other 63's (or other classes) stationed in that country, Sturge would like to hear from you.... Also for those of us in this country, Sturge's address is AFRS (MACOI), APO 143, San Francisco. He specifically wanted to get in touch with Stu Mahlin, so I've sent him your address, Stu.
In some marriage and engagement news, the Alumni Office has just sent me an announcement of my own wedding last August 23. Thanks, folks, but I really do know I'm hitched. Mike Bartels, a Ripley Hall charter member, was married in early September to Ellen Wallis Bargar in their hometown of Lakewood, Ohio. She attended Denison, while Mike was doing grad work at Ohio State. Dick Friedman was married in Newbury, N. H., to the former Sharon Telangitz. They spent their honeymoon in Quebec and are now back in Cambridge. Sharon is studying at B.U.'s School of Fine and Applied Arts. An engagement: Brenda Baum to Larry Goldwasser. I've lost track of where Larry is and what his future plans are ... so by the time this is printed he might be married. Brenda is a teacher in New York. If you can fill me in with more information, I'll be glad to hear from you, Larry. Dan Benson let us know of his engagement to Helen Eggleston of New York. She's studying at the Columbia School of Occupational Therapy.
In the same scholastic news, Joe Conners is teaching English at Loomis School and Ernie Torres (who was wed to the former Jan Huff of Bay Shore, N. Y., last summer) is assistant to the Dean at Kent School. Ernie taught math at Salisbury School last year. Freeman Botnick, in his second year at Albert Einstein Med School in New York, was elected president of his class. That's enough of that.... Also heard that Bob Baxley has joined the Lilly Co. as a methods engineer in his home of Indianapolis. He'll assist in methods and layout project in the firm's production field.
Earl Eichin, now Ensign Eichin of Virginia Beach, was wed on September 19 to the former Kathryn Bell Cover of Harrisonburg, Va. She's a graduate of Conn College. Earl finished up recently at OCS in Newport. No word about his duties at Virginia Beach.
A final note - about Rick Van Mell. He has received a General Electric Foundation Fellowship in Transportation to be used at Northwestern University in Evanston. Rick is studying there, heading toward his Master of Science degree, and perhaps a doctorate. Rick stayed on in Hanover after our graduation and received a Bachelor of Engineering Degree from Thayer School in transportation. I don't quite understand what Rick's doing now, but I'll describe it: he plans to study transportation development, the economic, political, and social environment in which transportation operates and the use of a multi-model system in the development of transportation networks.... And I thought the law was complex.
That's it for this month.... Merry Christmas to all. It's hard to believe that it's that time again.
