The releases, data, and information bul- letins are beginning to come in steadily from the Alumni Fund Office in Hanover. By now each of you should have been contacted by your Class Agent in the area. Bill Russell, Head Agent as you know, has sent a letter to the entire class about our progress in this, our first Alumi Fund Drive. He was in New Jersey for the early part of the drive, in training with the Coast Guard, but now has returned home and is really on top of the progress of the class. We're bracketed with six other classes, the most recent grad- uating ones, in our Green Derby competi- tion. So far we haven't been near the top of the group, so it's definitely time to send in the envelopes. Both your particular agent and Bill will keep you up-to-date with the developments in the drive and the progress of the class. I can't stress the importance of each individual contribution too strongly. At this stage of our careers, none of us has too much extra change, but for this cause I'm confident that we all can gather some- thing together to send on to Hanover.
Now, some news:
Steve Jacobstein, another of my road-trip-to-Boston compatriots, has announced his engagement to Pam Williams. Pam had been attending Simmons, but with Steve struggling along at Cornell Law, she felt that he needed her help up there and plans to transfer to Elmira, a women's college just outside of Ithaca.
I also received a long letter from Al Palmer some time ago, but this is the first issue that it could be used. Al is studying philosophy and politics while using his Reynolds at Oxford. He and wife Carole are living in new apartments built by Magdalen College, but sans central heating, wall insulation, storm windows, etc. He writes that the outside weather, cold and damp, often gets inside because of these inadequacies ... but Al will manage until he comes back next year to study law. He enclosed a couple of wonderful stories which our classmates have heard or been involved in, but Skip should use these in the next Newsletter. Bruce Berman, Steve Spahn, Pete Israelson and Carl Maves are also studying in that area, so they often drop in on Al for "Dartmouth Club Dinners" prepared by Carole. They might like it so well that they'll join the ranks of the married.
Speaking of marriages - finally got the details on John McElwaine and his marriage to Melissa Craig. She's a Holyoke graduate from Connecticut and will live with John in Washington [I believe], while he continues to work down there. Much engagement activity this month: first, Jim Puklin to Diane Venezky. Diane graduated from Northwestern and was working as a research assistant in psychotherapy at the University of Illinois College of Medicine. It's a good match, because Puk is doing research in physiology at Chicago Med School, prior to starting medical school in earnest there. They'll be married on June 14, I think in Peoria. Also, Chuck Applegate has announced his marriage to Gretchen Everhard. Gater is an ensign now, and might be down in Honolulu by the time this is printed. It's a fine place for an extended honeymoon. Blair Wood slipped away from the base at Fort Sill long enough to become engaged to Margaret Pierce, of Greenfield, Mass. She's a junior at the University of Denver, which is pretty far away from Oklahoma if my geography is right.
The Packer has gotten engaged. That's right - Steve Pennypacker, one of OCS's finest, has announced his engagement to Virginia Allen, a student at Conn College. Right now, I really don't know where Packer is stationed or when he's planning the wedding, so if he does, let us know.
Judith Turner has become the bride of Jeff Fletcher. They were married in Manchester, N. H. Judy was a nurse at Mary Hitchcock. And still more: Steve Bank let us know of his engagement to Elaine Feist, a student at Washington University in St. Louis. Steve's on a Public Health Fellowship in psychology which he is using at the University of North Carolina. No word on a planned wedding date.
Bill Gerstley took quill in hand, got in out of the sun, and brought me up-to-date on the latest news from the California climes. He and Ted Cutler are out at the University of California at Berkeley in Business School, which is a pretty good place to learn the business. Billy writes that the weather has been "indescribable" but then he did ... and I'm green with envy. There are over 13,000 co-eds at Berkeley, the sun always shines, the temperatures range in the 70's-80's during the day. He and Teddy have been doing well with the books and the women, which means that some of us will be transferring out there very shortly. Bill also collected some news about other 63's on the campus: Bob Kaplan and Bill Daniels are reading the fine print at the Cal Law School; Jerry Varty is studying languages for the government at Monterey School of Languages. Bill also let me know why we didn't see more of Jim Page at the Winter Olympics at Innsbruck. I knew that Jim had made the team, led by Coach Al Merrill, but then only saw his name in the jump. It seems that Jim came down with a bad cold and had to drop out of the cross country. For creditors and friends of Bill, his address is 2124 Parker Street, #207, Berkeley.
Other items of note: Larry Chapman has joined the Air Force and has been stationed at Lackland in San Antonio for awhile. He'll leave there as a navigator, about 8 months from now. More service news from OCS at Newport and Paul Cieurzo, PaulKappel now an ensign and assistant communications
officer at the Coast Guard Training Station, and John Ryan at Aviation Officer Candidate School in South Weymouth, Mass. John will report to Pensacola on August 13 after Tuck School sessions are oyer. And finally, Al Davies plunged right into the real estate business and has been made a director of the J. Clarence Davies real estate firm in New York, one of the city's oldest.
That's it for May. Don't forget about the Alumni Fund Drive - we're right in the middle of it now. Its importance to the College is tremendous, so don't put off mailing in your envelope. Thanks, and keep writing.
