How fortunate for your undernourished secretary (for news that is) that there is a welcome voice occasionally heard from the wilderness. Here verbatim is a dispatch from Ad Winship.

"John Wyper recently announced his engagement to Betsy Dick, with plans for marriage on April 18. John's present clan of two will be augmented by three large and active boys. Last reports are that come October 10, he will break away from his duties as vice president of Connecticut General Life Insurance Company long enough to join the thundering herd of alumni coming to Hanover for the Princeton game.

"Recent 1942 visitors to Hanover include: Jim and Laura Rendall and son Trip who visited Hanover briefly of a recent Saturday afternoon after an admissions interview at Proctor Academy. When last seen Jim was trying to round up enough tickets for that evening's Dartmouth-Cornell hockey game to make an overnight extension of their trip worthwhile.

"Jerry Garduno's widow Joanne and son Mark visited us recently with friends. She is living in Lowell, Mass., and is currently serving as librarian of the public schools in neighboring Acton.

"George and Weezie Clark and CharlieBrown, all of Carlisle, Mass., were in town recently on one of their frequent skiing season forays into the north country. The Clarks' oldest son Roy is currently enrolled as a freshman at Harvard, but they detect a green tinge in the eyes of Donnie, next in line for college admissions among the Clark clan.

"Bud Dutton, recently Wah Hoo Wah'd on becoming director of the National Capital Planning Commission, was in town in February to speak to Professor Went Eldredge's class on City Planning.

"Em Rice and Bob Buckalew were seen here over Freshman Fathers' Weekend, both being led a stiff pace from class to reception to sporting events by sons Dave and Bruce respectively. Em underwent serious surgery last year, but now looks well on the mend. Buck's son Bruce, an accomplished tennis player, took up squash for the first time this winter and is now playing number two on the freshman team.

"Also in town on that weekend was the dad of Walter Jacobs Altholz, son of Roxann Altholz and our deceased classmate Walter Jacobs."

Those among us. who had difficulty with freshman English might take a hint from Ad. When you write, a little extra diligence may spare the secretary the chore of editing your copy - an important consideration at this time of year!

Lavinia Thomson, widow of Charles R.Thomson who died in 1961, has advised by a very pleasant letter that the friends and former patients of Tasty in the town of Amesbury, Mass., where he practiced medicine for 14 years, have contributed in his memory to a new modern addition to their town's hospital. Charles Jr. is in his junior year at the college.

The New York Times recently reviewed Harold Bond's "Return to Cassino." During his recent year in England, Harry took his wife and daughters to the scene of some World War II action in which he participated. The review states, "His book would stand out in any time as a remarkably thoughtful, quiet-mannered memoir of battles that concern us all. It is without the usual swagger that marks one extreme and the disenchantment that marks the other." I'd suggest you obtain a copy of this book, read it, meditate on the thoughts of the author, and bring it along to the 25th reunion. I am sure Harry will be glad to autograph it for you.

Jim Mulligan, a division superintendent at the Stanley Works in New Britain, Conn., has his hat in the ring again. He is seeking candidacy as an alderman-at-large on the Republican Ticket. Jim currently fills this office and I imagine he will continue to do so for some years to come. The article mentioned Jim's age - didn't realize he was that "well along" in years!

Orin C. Witter has been elected president of the Hartford, Conn., chapter of the National Association of Accountants. He has been active with this chapter for many years and has held all the top positions in the organization. Orin is cost supervisor of Cushman Industries and resides in West Hartford. Dick Bolton has resigned as assistant vice president of the National Commercial Bank and Trust Company of Albany, N.Y. He will resume private law practice. He will continue to serve as a consultant in industrial development and community planning. Active in many civic organizations, Dick has become widely known as a speaker and as a lay preacher in the Episcopal Church.

I wish to offer congratulations to members of the Class who have sons at the College - or sons and daughters in colleges throughout the land. This is evidence of having succeeded to a considerable degree in the extremely challenging job of being a father. With five youngsters, I am aware of the problems — the answers often elude me! (For reference to mothers' significant contribution, please refer to the appropriate alumnae publication.) My heart warms to those who develop in their children the desire to make and shape and contribute - rather than drift with the tide.
