The tennis team under new Coach Wayne Van Voorhees had a fine spring trip, winning six and losing three. Junior Tucky Mays is playing in the number-one position with Captain Ned Miller at two.
The racquetmen opened with a 5-4 loss to Georgetown but came back strong to beat the University of Virginia 6-3. After a 9-0 defeat by Maryland, the Green then put together four straight wins. The Indians shut out Old Dominion twice 9-0 and trimmed Randolph-Macon 6-3 and 7-2. In their final encounter they lost to Navy 9-0.
Dave Barton is currently in the number-three spot, but the picture behind him isn't completely clear. Sophomore Tom Zavorsky has joined the team along with Jerry Dericks, and both of these men could figure in future matches. One serious loss, however, is that of Wally Lord, a senior, who has been sidelined with an injury. As it now stands, Doug Judah, Marshall Wallach, and Zavorsky should all be right behind the top three players.
In the doubles it will be Mays and Wallach in the top position, followed by Judah and Miller. The third doubles team is still a question mark. Looking at the season as a whole: the tennis team has a good chance to post a winning season.
