Ab Oakes succeeds Eddie Jeremiah as Dartmouth's head coach of hockey. Eddie has announced his plans to retire, and Ab is scheduled to take over with the 1967-68 season. I am quoting Jeremiah from the Daily D via Will Sogg: "After next season will be an appropriate time, I feel, to step aside and let such a capable man as Ab take charge." Ab and Cindy have three sons, Sandy (Abner IV), Jeff, and David, and are living at 2 Read Road. Ab and Cindy came back to Hanover in the fall of 1960. At that time there was one son in the family. Ab assumed the position of freshman coach of soccer, hockey, and lacrosse. Back in December, '62, Ab wrote, "Ten years ago we were freshmen and today's freshmen haven't changed despite what some alumni like to think. I worked with over 100 of them every year..., and their enthusiasm and spirit cannot help but rub off on you. Had a 9-1 record in soccer this fall and our student Ahmed Osman was on the team. ... The family and I go off to Minneapolis in the summer where I teach at a Summer Hockey School. Three years ago I started and head the local Pee Wee Hockey group (70 boys) along with Seaver Peters '54 and Ron Campion '55. Also on Hanover Recreation Council and Hanover Youth Drive plus New England Representative for the International Silver Stick Youth Hockey Group. Also manage to be in local Naval Reserve Unit and make Lou's for coffee every morning at 9:30." That is some of what has gone into the making of Dartmouth's future varsity hockey coach.

Mehmet Arda spent his spring vacation from Dartmouth in the Boston area staying at the homes of various '56s. Roil MacKenzie gave him a tour of the State House. Mehmet had been with Glen and CarolFrench before coming to stay with me in Cambridge. He succeeded in getting a ticket to Boston Symphony and was very enthusiastic about that. He also enjoyed the chance to visit a couple of Turkish girl friends in the area! Ahmed Osman invited several of us to supper and to see the film "Doctor Zhivago." Ahmed finished Dartmouth last summer and is doing graduate work at Harvard in economics. He plans to work in Cambridge this summer and to continue his studies in the fall. He has an apartment close to the Harvard campus at 96 Prescott Street. Mehmet hopes to find work for half of the summer in the States and then get home to Istanbul for a few weeks before starting his second year at Dartmouth. He too is interested in economics. Another feature of Mehmet's spring vacation stay in the Boston area was a visit with Tim and Nancy Fohl in Concord, Mass. Tim is a great canoeing enthusiast and coincidentally is both the owner of a canoe and conveniently located close to the Concord River. Mehmet is back at the books now; he rooms at 101 E Brown Hall.
