I've got to sandwich the writing of this month's column in between two road trips, so I hope you won't mind the wry bread and minced filling.
The leaves are gone now, and so are freshman beanies - Palaeopitus voted to do away with them from now on at the end of Freshman Week. The Hanover Youth Corps will have to think of something else to snatch. My recent travels indicate to me that perhaps the '59s should start wearing beanies again; maybe with a little hair sprinkled on top. Or, in keeping with today's young styles, we could let our eyebrows grow long and comb them back over.
I had an early morning phone call a few weeks ago from Bob Sands. He announced his plans to marry Catherine Deutsch on November 26. Bob now works for Bethlehem Steel. After his wedding he'll have to stay pretty much on the beam. Several moons ago, Bill Boyle married Susan Fletcher in Corpus Christi. He is now on duty with the Army. The thought of traveling through Europe alone frightened EdEphraim into marrying Helen Harris back in June. The trip turned into a honeymoon and the couple now lives in New York City where Ed is with Mansfield Press. Digging even further into the past, a recent announcement discloses that foreign service officers don't all vanish - Ken Rogers married Eleanor Hutchinson back in May in Buffalo; current whereabouts unknown. In August, Peter Green took time out from his studies for an English Ph.D. at the University of Virginia and married Rosemary Jean Dobbins of San Antonio, Texas. There should be a good degree of harmony in the union because Rosemary received her Master's from Virginia before the wedding.
On the home front, John and BarbaraAllbee recently moved to Hanover where John is now serving as Admissions Officer of Tuck School. Barbara is one Carnival Queen who will not limit her presence to a winter weekend.
George Kelley has been named Chairman of the AT&T Shareowners Committee, an affiliate of United Shareowners of America, Inc. The Committee's purpose is to permanently represent the interest of the largest body of shareholders in the world, particularly in the current Federal Communications Commission hearings involving AT&T's rate structure. Kels is a graduate of Harvard Law and is taking a leave of absence from the law firm of Appleton, Rice and Perrin to assume this new position.
A recent letter from the Dartmouth Alumni Association of Northern California and Nevada mentions that Rod Snow has returned to Piedmont, Calif., after a stint in the Air Force. He is beginning a four-year residency course in Pathology at Fort Miley Veterans Administration Hospital in San Francisco. News from Manufacturers Hanover Trust is that Bob Foot has been appointed an assistant secretary of the bank at the Rockefeller Center Office. Bob, his wife, and young son are living in Bronxville, N. Y. He is presently working towards an M.B.A. in banking at NYU. Out in the wide open spaces, Bob Bartholomew has been named a Public Health Advisor by the Nevada Department of Health. I won't go into details, but you name the disease, and Bob looks into it. I guess he won't have to worry about poison ivy out in that territory. Garf DeMarco recently passed his bar exam in New Jersey and is with the law firm of Curcio, Donio and DeMarco. An announcement by the Yale Moot Court of Appeals for 1965-66 contains a long list of accomplishments by Jim Giddens. Not only did Jim's Moot Court team win the New England Regional Championship several years ago, but it got to the quarter finals in the national competition in New York. He was on the Sutherland Cup Team which won the Inter Law School competition in Washington in 1965 and he has since served as a Moot Court advisor. Currently, Jim is serving as a research assistant in economics at the Yale Economic Growth Center. And I could go on and on. Watch out, Rostow.
Back in the economy spiral, Ariel Halpern has recently become associated with Abacus Fund Inc., as a vice president and Doug Adams has been appointed assistant trust officer of the Bank of New York.
Another classmate is trying to keep the populace healthy: Don Bartlett has joined the staff of the U. S. Public Health Service's Robert A. Taft Sanitary Engineering Center in Cincinnati, Ohio. He is a physician in the Epidemiology Section of the Field Studies Branch, Division of Air Pollution. Don and Christine live at 5025 Shattuc Street, Mt. Lookout, Ohio, a suburb of Cincinnati. JackMcDonough hasn't needed public health attention so far though he is living down in Crimson territory, Cambridge, Mass. He was recently awarded a United States Steel Foundation Fellowship for his doctoral studies at Harvard Business School. The award is given to a candidate for the degree of Doctor of Business Administration who is especially well qualified for advanced study and research as a responsible position in education. After a brief stint with AT&T after graduation, and after serving with the Army until 1962, Jack returned to AT&T before enrolling in the Master's program at Harvard. He was awarded an Army Certificate of Achievement for outstanding service while he was with Uncle Sam. Last year, the first of his doctoral studies at Harvard, Jack was a research assistant on the faculty in the field of control.
Our families are still growing. Wesley Hale Baldwin arrived much to the pleasure of John and Anne Baldwin on September 15 at a healthy 7 pounds 15 ounces. Right about now, John and Anne are probably wondering what a good night's sleep is like; and so are young John and Claire who have a new sphere of influence to get accustomed to. Early in September, Jim and BetsyWooster added Charles Pine Wooster to their contingent. There should be some mighty tempting prospects for the freshman class fifteen to eighteen years from now. Bart Leynan Rickenbaugh, born on August 6, 1966, was recently registered for the Class of 1987. He is the son of Kent and CarolineRickenbaugh who are still residing out in the shadow of the Rockies in Denver.
Well, I hope you have enjoyed the sandwich. I've got to pack my bags and head for the Midwest again. By the time this reaches you I will have returned with, I hope, a few weeks before the snow flies so I can get the storm windows up. Order your Thanksgiving turkey now. Possum isn't a bad substitute if you can figure out how to hang it in the oven.
