Elmer and Mabel Woodman's daughter Ellen Doll of Charleston, W. Va„ writes family rhymes. Of her mother she says:
She sits on her couch, reading books by the Or1 works at some game to increase her word power, At one year past mnety she puts us to shame, For though lonely and aging, she does not complain, . And prefers in her own home in Rolla to be, - But oh, how I wish she could be here with me!
Two of Bill Wiggin's children, Arthur Bill and Dorothy Ray, still live in Exeter where the latter's two sons help Dot handle her business manufacturing fine furniture. But sister Jane's husband, Lyle Robillard, has a new job in Middlebury, Vt., so they and their four children are now Vermonters. They had lived in Dad's old home, but have rented it instead of selling "because of fond memories." Now they are all making new friends while Jane has a new job as administrative assistant to the Comptroller at the college. Dad was once principal of the high school in Brandon only twelve miles away. An older daughter, Ruth Chase, writes from Jarvis, N. Y., "I miss your newsy class news letters. My oldest grandson, John, is back in Texas after being a year in Vietnam." NedBaldwin's daughter Marion reports that her husband, Capt. Ray Tryon, has retired after years of service in the Coast and Geodetic Survey, and that her own eyesight has been improved by an operation.
Florence (Mrs. Warren Eastman) writes that her grandson Allen has graduated from Amherst and is studying at University of Chicago for his master's degree and possibly a doctorate. So he is now near her, and also his Palmer cousins. But his sister Caroline is working in New York City for the National Council on Compensation Insurance. She has liked it - except when she was walking both ways during the January strike. George Prescott's son Allen, like everybody else, was excited by the Princeton victory. Then unexpectedly he adds, "Just wait till 1966!" Now what, Mr. '99er, has Dartmouth still up her sleeve? She has topped the Ivy League, won the Lambert Trophy, and emerged the only major college team in the country to finish the football season both undefeated and untied. It must be George has some inside information about the Alumni Fund Drive this year. Well, whatever the secret is we'll certainly put our weight behind that endeavor. We promise to do what we can to help Class Agent Joe Gannon turn in another top performance.
Cliff and Julia Fifield report from Orford that Julia's mother Gertrude Warren is doing quite well, rides out with somebody almost every day. Their own children are doing well too. These patron saints of Ninety Nine remind us that they are always avail- able to help when needed. Just to "keep their hand in," so to speak, they are giving a lift to 1901 in their Sixty-Fifth next month. Incidentally our Orford friends have forty sheep to look after as well as the new flock of this year's lambs. Their motto is surely, "Keep busy and you'll be happy!"
From Dave Storrs' Phoebe Stebbins and Jack: "With help from co-owners and hardy friends we've made that neglected house in that over-grown jungle on Knubble Bay's Georgetown Island just beyond Bath into a clean, comfortable home. Visitors? Yes! Here or in Hanover. Ann, after a B.A. from UVM, works near Burlington for 1.8.M. and maybe a VW! Pat's a Smith junior, majoring in Government; David's studying me- chanical design in Boston's Wentworth Institute; our John is involved in soccer and skiing. Hanover home? Quiet!"
I am sorry to report that Mrs. Blanche Rice Hawkes died in York, Me., March 7, 1966 after a four-week illness following a heart attack. Details are not yet available.
