As in past years, the Class of 1948 was well represented at the Alumni Fund dinner for class agents in the Metropolitan New York area, but this year we had the signal honor to have our Classmate John Hatheway perform as dinner chairman. The introductions were handled with John's usual aplomb and President Dickey and Fund Chairman Rupert Thompson 28 made short talks which left the audience, the largest ever at a gathering in New York, with enthusiasm and the sense of purpose required of those endeavoring to do a job for the College.
Sitting next to me at the dinner was Iran Hummel, who had come from his home in Milford, Conn. Fran is now marketing manager for the Stanley Hardware division of the Stanley Works, and his company and division has grown substantially ever since the new management, including Fran, entered the company a few years ago. His three sons are progressing nicely with the twins now thirteen and Paul, nine. It was also enjoyable to see Mort Smith, Lloyd Krumm, Charlie Herterich, Jim Schaefer,Bud Elliott, and, of course, our Head Agent, Lou Perry, who reports the organization of the Agents is shaping up nicely.
I happened to ask Bud Elliott how Dons and his son, Richard, now eleven, were, and to my surprise Bud, whom I hadn't seen in a few years, informed me in addition they now have a young son John, just three and a daughter, Lisa almost two. They are living in the city and Bud is still in the wholesale jewelry business.
Sometimes it seems as if we don't hear as much about the progress of our classmates in the Midwest, therefore, it was good to hear about Jim McElvain's election to the Board of Directors of the Grundy County National Bank in Morris, Ill. Jim is a civil engineer and has his own contracting firm in Morris. He has been prominent in many community affairs as well as being a member of the board at the Country Club." He and June have one son, Tom, who is now fourteen.
After two years as Midwest Bureau Manager for ABC News, Bing Aspinwall has been appointed Manager of the ABC News, Washington Bureau. This is a significant promotion for Bing, who has had extensive experience and handled many major news stories during his fifteen-year broadcast journalism career. I am sure Val and Bing will also enjoy the active and interesting social life in Washington into which Bing naturally is immersed because of his position.
Even though his medical practice keeps him very busy, Dr. Jack Babbitt, who lives in Huntington, W. Va., has decided to run for the State Legislature. Jack feels that men of his experience and abilities are needed to improve his town and state. He and Jeanne have three daughters.
I hope everything is going well for Leonard Sullivan at Oxford Laboratories in Red- wood City, Calif. Leonard has been there a couple of years now. He and Catherine live in nearby San Mateo and have four children.
Once again I want to urge all of you to think about Dartmouth's need in relation to the benefits to our society derived from excellence in education and what an institution like Dartmouth contributes toward this goal.
