It seems hard to believe that it was just a year ago that I sent the first questionnaires to all of you. For the purpose of bringing our files up-to-date and also so we could print the directory. Because everyone has been so cooperative your secretary can now report that our records are as complete and up-to-date as any Dartmouth class. I only hope that we can maintain this record.
Now for the latest spring news about our classmates. Walt Baker has been appointed manager of the Wethersfield, Conn, branch of the Society for Savings. This is a new branch of the bank which recently opened. Walt and Joyce live nearby in Simsbury with their four children, Cathy, Tim, Wendy, and Faith.
I recently heard that Ray Richard moved from Chicago, where he was employed by a management consultant firm, to Fitchburg, Mass., where he has been appointed vice president of the Fitchburg Paper Company. Ray will be in charge of paper mill technical services. Ray is a Tuck School graduate. He and Gloria are the parents of Bruce, five, and David, three and a half.
The world of science seems to be becoming more and more, complicated. However Bob Eckerson is keeping well ahead of things at Sperry Gyroscope Company. He has just been promoted to the position of engineering section head for systems in the Tactical Support Equipment Systems Engineering Department of the Air Armament Division. With this title I am sure that Bob has achieved success. Next time he receives a promotion we will need an extra column in the magazine. Bob and his wife, Arlene, live in North Bellmore, Long Island. Their daughter, Lynn, is nine and son Dan is almost five.
News, which is hot oft the wires, is the announcement of the Colgate-Palmolive Company's promotion of Don Drescher to Manager of the Home Office Employee Services. Don formerly had the post of compensation analyst. Don resides with his wife Joan and the three little Dreschers in Maplewood, N. J.
The candidate from New York state for national Vice President of the Junior Chamber of Commerce at the convention in St. Louis will be Lew Aronowitz currently President of the State Jaycees. We wish Lew luck in the coming election. He has been doing a terrific job here in New York and in addition to his position as president of this organization he has been active in just about everything else in and around the Albany area.
I received a wonderful letter a short time ago from Phil Shepard. Phil is a Lieutenant Commander in the Navy, attached to the Staff Commander Amphibious Group Three. His home port is San Diego where his wife Ruth Ann bides her time waiting for daddy with Debbie, nine; Bill, seven and a half; and Andy, two and a half. Previous duty has included two years stationed in Berlin, Germany, three at the Pentagon in Washington and two attached to the Joint Staff Alaskan Command. I'm sure that promotions will continue to come fast for Shep.
A few weeks ago I had an opportunity to talk with Dave Loye who was visiting Joe Bannon here in New York. Dave is living in Oklahoma City where he is editor and general manager o£ the magazine, "Oklahoma Today." He and Billy have four children.
As this is the last issue for the summer there are a few brief notes on. some of you I haven't mentioned recently.
Bucky Beck is the men's wear buyer at The Fair, Chicago department store. He lives in Oaklawn, is married to Betty, and has three children: Mike, eleven, Barbara, ten, and Lory, two.
Joe Brady is now treasurer of the J. R. Smith Manufacturing Company, manufacturers of industrial plumbing supplies in New Jersey. He is not married and lives in Newark.
Legal counsel in Chicago can be obtained from Don Casey who is a partner in the firm of Brundage and Short. Don and Anne live on the North Shore in Wilmette. They have four boys, ages eight down to three.
Out in Fort Wayne, Ind., Tom Gallant is hard at work as an insurance agent for the State Farm Insurance Company. We have another lawyer in John Mack of Memphis, Tenn. John is a partner in the firm of Clifton and Mack. He is also doing a very good job as President of the Dartmouth Club of Memphis. John and Jeanne are the parents of John Jr., Carter, Averill.
One of the outstanding facts that I have encountered in compiling the statistical information on our class was the number of physicians — 39 by my count which is ten per cent of those who graduated. Here are a few of those practicing medicine around the country.
Sabe Basescu specializes in psychoanalysis in New York City. He lives with his family in New Rochelle. Bill Ivins is a very busy pediatrician out in Huntington, Long Island. He and Liz live in the same town. Jack Bobbit is a urologist at the Bobbit-Harwood clinic in Huntington, W. Va. He and Jeanne have three children.
Bob Flanders is specializing in internal medicine and lives in Indianapolis, Ind. Sam Jackson practices general dentistry in Macon, Ga. His wife's name is Ann.
An ambitious soul is Dwight Burley who built and practices at his own medical clinic in Coral Gables, Fla. I'm sure that Dwight is doing very well and that his clinic will continue to prosper. Dwight and Ida Lee's children are Karen, eight; Todd, six; and Laura Lee, three.
Also we find John Mahony practicing as an orthopedic surgeon in Fort Lauderdale. The Mahony family consists of Marilyn and their three children. Walt Newman, who some of you might remember when he was captain of the track team a few years ago in Hanover, now has a general practice in Wilkes Barre, Penna. Walt and Margaret's offspring are Patty, Grace, and George.
We have several classmates in the medical profession in New England. Among them are Norm Saunders and Harry Wood in West Hartford, Conn. Norm specializes in internal medicine and Harry in obstetrics. Harry isn't married yet, but Norm and Martha have two prospective Dartmouth students.
Chris Matthews is a surgeon in Mount Clemens, Mich. Chris and Jackie's family include Dick, age eight; Chris III, six; and Ann, three.
As I have all of next winter to continue catching up on our last ten years' whereabouts, I'd better end this month's report by wishing all of you a very pleasant summer. So long till next fall.
