The opening auction of the library of the late Thomas Winthrop Streeter, considered the finest private collection of Americana, drew 600 major collectors and dealers from all parts of the country and from overseas. The account of the first voyage around the world by one of Magellan's companions, Antonio Pigafetta, a Venetian nobleman, whose book was published about 1525, was sold for $56,000 at the Park-Bernet Galleries. The Pigafetta first edition, one of seven known copies, was acquired by the Clements Library of University of Michigan. An earlier account of Magellan's voyage was bought by Warren Howell, a San Francisco dealer for $12,000. It was by Maximilian Transylvanus, a son of the Archbishop of Salzburg, who interviewed the returning sailors in Spain and sent the account to his father in Germany, where it was published in Cologne in 1523. The letters of Nicholas Barre, published in 1557, telling of the French attempt to. found a settlement in Brazil in 1555, brought $25,000. The successful bidder was Kenneth Nebenzahl, Chicago dealer for the Newbury Library. Mercator's Atlas, published in Dusseldorf in 1595, was acquired by London book dealer, Charles Traylen, for $14,500. The sale of the Streeter collection is scheduled to continue at intervals and is to be completed in 1969. Ultimately, 17 institutions, including New York Historical Society, the American Antiquarian Society and John Carter Brown Library, will share in the proceeds.
