Truly, this stint as secretary must go down in Hanover annals as the shortest on record - all of two months. As you can see by the address above, Bill Van Law will handle the writing from now on. "The Wall Street Journal" has seen fit to transfer me out of New York to London for a few years; the cost of trans-Atlantic mail and all being what it is, the decision was made to pass this corner along. And by the time you read this, I'll be on Carnaby Street watching the mini skirts go by.
To the news. Bob French has been named assistant managing director of Lord and Taylor's new store in Ridgewood, N. J. Bob went with Lord and Taylor after graduation and has filled a number of posts, the latest being assistant managing director of the posh store's outlet in Westchester County, N. Y. Walt Shea is the brand new chief underwriter of Travelers Insurance Co.'s life, accident and health department in Hartford. He's been with Travelers for six years.
The New Haven Jewish Community Council recently presented Al Weiner with its Emanuel Gratenstein Leadership award. Al was the first chairman of the council's associate board of directors and also belongs to a long list of other community committees, groups, boards and what have you. Somewhere, he finds time to practice law and serve as president of the New Haven County Junior Bar Association.
Some brief notes, loosely translated from scribblings on the back of class dues notices (penmanship isn't a strong point of '58s, apparently). Jerry Manne is assistant manager of Continental Grain Co.'s operations in Columbus, Ohio. John Kavanagh is sales manager for Wyeth Laboratories, a division of American Home Products Corp., in central Massachusetts and also reports in as the proud father of red-headed Matthew Eugene Kavanagh. Baltimore's courts are ringing with the legal pronouncements of Morty Fisher. The new vice president for operations of Carter Overton, Inc., a cosmetics distributor, in Newton, Mass., is Andy Toorock. He also notes the first addition - a girl - to his family this summer.
And still more children. Dan Wilke's first son, Benjamin Gordon, arrived in midJuly. Dan's grey-flanneled habitat in the advertising world these days is Benton & Bowles, where he is the account executive for Vick Chemical, part of Richardson-Merrell, Inc. John Blunt's wife raised the family total to five in September with John's first girl, Barbara Elizabeth.
The doctors again are overpowering the other occupations in this class. Tom Aaberg has moved from cold Massachusetts to sunny Oklahoma as an ophthalmologist with the U.S. Public Health Service. Dr. Tom previously had been at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, where he did his residency. A new resident of Hanover is dentist Jim Brackett. Jim and his wife have moved into a home on Lyme Road, where Jim also has set up his practice.
Mark Saginor's dues notice is just full of information. Some time during a year of research into endocrinology at UCLA's Medical Center, Mark found time to become engaged to Sue Krevoy. They'll be married next month (February) and Mark figures to begin private practice in Los Angeles come July. At the wedding, Mark promises, will be Hank Hoff and Dan Varty.
And the last of the doctors this month. Walt Anyan, now is a pediatrician and post-doctoral fellow at Yale's medical school. Walt is engaged to Carol Ann Smith, a graduate of Florida State University. Walt was with the Army Medical Corps for a while after graduation from Harvard Medical School.
Ben Fuller's teaching life seems to be a full occupation. He's at St. Albans School in Washington, D. C., after spending four years at Blair Academy in New Jersey. "I had had enough of country living," he claims. Ben runs a dormitory, advises the student newspaper and teaches 12th grade English.
Doc Defoe is working with the young ones, too, and at a furious pace. During the summer, he runs three camps - and plays Indian guide on 8-week canoe trips - and during the winter, he operates a ski camp in Maine for children plus running a ski dorm for students and young adults. And when he tires of all that, there is something Doc calls "Mistassada Safari” - a fishing trip for adults through Northern Quebec. As his note says, "Needless to say, Gardner is in his element - Indians, airplanes, flyfishing and all."
Around New York now are ... PeteEccles, a proper Wall Street lawyer ... Ken Platnik, associate editor of the American Stock Exchange magazine, "American Investor" ... Dick Roth, an account executive with Grey Advertising ... Jim Spence, an ABC-TV sports executive and television producer of the ill-fated Dartmouth-Harvard football game ... and Archie Whitehead, head of three personnel and management search agencies.
And that completes the news. You'll excuse me, gentlemen. I must get fitted for a trench coat.
