Ed Canby writes: "When you have been as negligent as I have in heeding the urgent pleas of a succession of class newsletter editors for bits of information and gossip to verify our individual existence, you wonder just where to begin, once you've made the momentous decision to break out of your own self-imposed shroud of silence. Feeling sure that a blow-by-blow resume of my past since last writing would be of little interest except to my accountant and a few assorted snoops in the Internal Revenue Service, I shall go for brevity and just give a few brief facts to clarify my current status quo.

"Not having an up-to-date class bibliography of '29 occupations in front of me prevents me from speaking with authority, but I do have a feeling that I am alone in the field in which I have settled, namely, painting. During one low-ebb period in the dim dark past I did do a spell of house painting, but the classification to which I am now referring is the one that bears the fancy label of 'fine art painting.' I have now been at that soul-satisfying profession for about three years, and daily seem to regret that it took me so long to wade through the other endeavours - some of which were rewarding, and others merely time-consuming — awaiting the day when it suddenly dawned upon me that if I ever were to reap the real rewards which can come only when the inner man is satisfied, then I must take the brush in hand and approach a blank canvas in front of me, and, to the best of my ability, express the feelings and emotions and ideas that were lying restive inside me....

"At the moment my choice for my permanent home site is Sedona, Ariz., a town of about 5,000 which is 110 miles north of Phoenix, in a picture book setting of gorgeous red rock formation. I took this bold step knowing full well that this was a field wherein but a limited number could achieve financial success, but a fortunate and most unexpected business venture four years ago, in which I was able to become a one-fourth partner, inactive, solved the basic financial problem for me. It consists of a Trading Post and a Chevron filling station on the Navajo Indian Reservation.... I seem to have rambled on more than I really intended, but maybe one of these times soon I can break away and make it back to Hanver at a time when there is something 'special' going on for our class." ...

At Convocation exercises John Dickey made some timely observations: "God forbid that the American academic community should find itself jockeyed into being a stalking horse for the proposition that in America today any cause that can be well served by conduct that would be intolerable behavior if used by the Philistines on us."

Frank Small has retired to Cape Cod, and suggests that one and all stop in and stay for a few weeks.... King Badger has been made full Professor of English in the College of Liberal Arts at Boston University. ... Ed Felch says that "Mr. McNamara just took care of my leisure for the next few years." He is Director of Nike-X Missiles Laboratory of Bell Telephone Labs., Whippany, N. J....

Dan Marx has sent along a handsome brochure of the Dartmouth Film Society, featuring the films of Joe Losey. The 18th Annual season opens with Joe's films as the feature, the first being "The Boy With The Green Hair." Considered the leading director of the British Cinema today, Joe originally became interested in film and theatre while at Dartmouth. After a spectacular career on the New York stage, Joe switched to movies in the '40's....

The Penn weekend was a real smash, Twenty-nine wise. The "regulars" were there, as well as many new and welcome faces. The wives were the best part of the deal, and they pitched in to make the event a success. Come back, one and all. We welcome you back into the fold!

Correction from Adolph Berger: "For one month shortly after my transfer to the Pacific Coast Office of the Bureau of Labor Statistics, U.S. Department of Labor, while my new boss was on a vacation trip to the Far East, I was "Acting Director." Aside from that brief interlude I have been hard at work becoming familiar with my new job as Assistant Regional Director for Operations and my new and very pleasant and interesting environment in San Francisco."
