We are dictating this letter in a voice still hoarse from the last quarter of the Harvard game. Those of us who were fortunate enough to be there will not forget the experience for a long time. The newspaper articles gave some indication of the excitement and tension but one had to be present to really appreciate this "cliff hanger." It was a perfect Autumn day and Ivy League football at its best. In addition to 18 members of the Class Executive Committee who where in town for a conveniently arranged meeting we spotted many '47s in our "choice" goal line seats. Ken Tice, Ed Sampson, Mo Morrisson, Doc Curley, Jim Shannahan, Phil Segel, Howard Hirshberg, Dick Shribman were classmates that we spotted. Undoubtedly other '47 s were present who may have been sitting in better locations through Harvard friends. Actually the way it worked out all of the Dartmouth touchdowns were scored at our end of the stadium. So it wasn't so bad.
As mentioned above, the Executive Class Council meeting was held and Doug Burch will report to you in his next class newsletter.
News of births are getting less frequent in our class but Dick Hollerith is doing his best to reverse the trend. Susan Spencer Hollerith arrived as the first post reunion baby (to the best of our knowledge).
Congratulations to one of our last class bachelors, George Bingham who was married to Carolyn S. Webb on November 25 in Wilts, England. Carolyn used to work at the British Embassy in Washington and we presume this is how they got together.
We understand that there are a total of six 1947 sons in the current Freshman Class at Hanover. Several names were mentioned last month and we now add to this the sons of Edward Davidson, James Osborn, HowardLuckenbach, and Dick Stevenson.
Dick Menin has accepted the office of Class Agent. We all know what a tremendous responsibility and difficult task this is. As a matter of fact Dick unfortunately got pneumonia walking to a college class agents' meeting in the rain. We hope he has fully recovered by now and that the physical hazards of this job will not be as great in the future.
New York Metropolitan area '47s - Please calendar the third Wednesday of every month for our class luncheon — 12:30 PM at the Dartmouth Club. Julian Sayer who has organized this informs us that attendance has been excellent and that a good time is had by all.
Congratulations to Michael R. Pender, Commissioner of the Department of Public Works of the Town of Hempstead, N. Y., who won two free trips to Expo '67. The trips were awarded for enrolling members in the Association of Public Work Agencies. We hope that a VIP pass went along with the trip so that the lines were not as long as some of us found them to be.
Down in Westchester County we hear that William F. McCaffrey has joined the faculty at the Byram Hills School in Armonk. Stephen G. Moore has recently conducted a section on Finance for the small business management workshop conducted by Champlain College held in St. Johnsbury, Vt. Steve is executive vice president of the Howard National and Trust Company of Burlington, Vt.
We have a modest class newsletter editor in Doug Burch so we are taking the liberty of reporting an interesting write-up on Doug in a recent trade publication. Doug is media director for P. Lorillard Company. The article which goes into some depths outlines an interesting and challenging position which Doug has been filling for some time now in an outstanding manner. To those of us who were at Reunion this explains the generous supply of cigarettes as part of the raffle program.
"Automatic" Sprinkler Corporation of America has elected Dan Carroll to its board of directors, with this citation by the Corporation's chairman and president: "Mr. Carroll is an outstanding businessman whose knowledge and experience will be an invaluable asset." Dan, a vice president and Cleveland regional managing officer of Booz, Allen & Hamilton, has directed a wide range of business surveys for industry and government as well as long-range planning projects and merger studies during his 13 years with the firm.
Lynn Knapp writes from his home in Framingham and indicates that he has been heavily involved in Marine Corps reserve activities.
If any of us are interested in camping or planning a family camping trip for the coming summer, we seem to have an expert in this field as a member of our class, Don Shedd of 3289 Pamlico Drive, S.W. Atlanta, Ga., reports he serves as assistant to the Regional Director, Bureau of Outdoor Recreation, U.S. Department of the Interior. He participates as a board member in the National Water Safety Congress, American Camping Association and other groups. Don traveled north as a banquet speaker at the Fall Leadership Conference of the North American Family Camping Association on November 12 in Colebrook, Conn. He is not outdone however by his wife, Edith, who is active in the Girl Scout movement and writes a regular column in Better Camping Magazine. The Girl Scout movement seems to be a natural for Don, who has four daughters active in scouting, so that when he serves as Girl Scout Troop Leader and Camping Advisor he practically has his own troop.
Jack Welsh is the newly elected vice president of Franklin Management Corporation, investment counsel firm of Boston and New York. He joined the firm's research department last month after having been a vice president of Clark Dodge & Co., mem- bers of the New York Stock Exchange, and manager of that firm's Boston office. Jack and Barbara are living in Topsfield, Mass.
James Holway is Program Manager of the Aerospace Division of Westinghouse Electric Corporation, lives with his wife Harriette and two children at 6215 Lawyers Hill Road, Elkridge, Md. James serves his community having been elected to the Charter Board and is busy writing the constitution for Howard County in Maryland for "Home Rule." Congratulations to Karl E. Becker promoted to Captain U.S. Navy, July 1. To those of us who never got beyond 2nd Class Seaman this is indeed an outstanding achievement. Karl reports that he sees J. G. Carlin who works for Hughes Aircraft and visits Washington frequently on business and RoyF. Armstrong who is president of Armstrong Associates, a manufacturers' representative firm in Chicago.
Received a card from Ernie Caster who reports for career news that he is "Busy, busy living." Ernie then reports that for work he is involved in the industrial Credit Union and for community activities his church, the YMCA and USNR. That and the family of two daughters and one son keep him busy.
We have a feeling that the allotted space for this month's article is just about out. For those of you who were kind enough to send in news on your doings we should be able to get them in next month's issue. It is very gratifying to hear from so many classmates and we don't think there is any doubt that we all enjoy this news. When you read this article the football season and Thanksgiving will have passed. Christmas holidays will practically be upon us. It may be slightly premature, but let us take this opportunity to wish all '47s and their families a joyous Christmas holiday and every good wish for health and happiness in 1968.
