Winter Carnival Time! Do you get nostalgic as you read the sport pages this week and see the Winter Carnival reports? If so, you probably spent your carnival concentrating on indoor "sports." If you get chills and are glad you are home by the fireplace you probably were a loyal spectator at the Ski Jump and Davis Rink. In any case it was a long time ago and who knows what Winter Carnival is like today? Good memories, we hope.
A news release reports that Roy W. Murray has been elected vice president for Development of The Wackenhut Corporation, national investigators and security organization. Roy will be directing the company's sales development program throughout the United States and Latin America from the company's executive offices in Coral Gables. This has us somewhat confused for when we saw Roy at reunion he was house hunting in Connecticut having left Florida. If the information is correct, it seems that our northern climate was too much for Roy and his family of divers and swimmers. We don't blame them for returning to the sunny south. Please confirm this, Roy, and good luck and congratulations.
Hugh Chapin served as a panelist at the 25th Annual Meeting of the Independent Mutual Insurance Agents Association of New England recently. Hugh shared the spotlight with an outstanding group of politicians, insurance executives, and none other than Carl Yastrzemski.
A cocktail party at the Dartmouth Club of New York was held on Friday evening, December 15 to set the holiday mood. We won't list the names of all present as many of them were familiar faces; however, it was very pleasant to see Bob Callagher who works at Wall Street and lives in Darien. Bob had not the opportunity to attend any of our reunions or recent activities and it was a pleasure to see him. Another classmate from whom we haven't heard recently and was in attendance was Roscoe Radcliff and his wife Ginny. Roscoe has been in New York for about three years now and lives in Stuyvesant Town. Roy andAudrey Harris had such a good time at reunion they showed up hoping for more of the same. Roy's son who is graduating from Horace Mann was accepted for early admission at Carleton College in Minnesota.
Another birth announcement was recently received. Coleman Edward II arrived on Saturday, December 2 to be welcomed by Commander and Mrs. Coleman EverettMyers. Coleman is at the Legal Office of the United States Naval Station, Mayport, Fla.
All of us who suffered on the Boston & Maine Railroad at any time during our Hanover stay (and who didn't?) probably enjoyed reading that Jordon Eskin, who had been leading a proxy fight for the Boston & Maine for two years, won the fight. Jordon was appointed to the Board of Directors of the Boston and Maine. This achievement was of enough significance to make the front page of the Wall Street Journal and the front page of the financial section of the New York Times. Congratulations, Jordon.
January 2 brought a flood of mail and it seems that the leisure time of the holidays and the friendly spirit prevailing induced many classmates to write. Of particular interest was a long and pleasant letter from Jack Jeffus who is a senior vice president and director of the City National Bank in Wichita Falls, Texas. Jack and his interesting letter filled us in on his family and many civic activities and Dartmouth people that he has ran into. As space is limited here I am forwarding a letter to Doug Burch who can do it more justice in the Class newsletter.
Art Diemer informs us that after 20 years with Union Carbide he has joined Cabot, Cabot & Forbes in Boston as vice president in charge of building management and operations. He'll be living at Pond Street, Dover, Mass.
John B. Campbell writes from River Forest, Ill., where he is now director of Markets for the Aluminum Mill Products of the Reynolds Aluminum Supply Company. John comments on his children's accomplishments and we quote "Too young to do anything but get in our hair."
Bill Hendren, a pediatric surgeon, is Surgical Chairman of Children's Service at the Massachusetts General Hospital. Bill is not only involved with children professionally but has a daughter who graduated from Colby Junior in June and four boys ranging from 7 to 17 in age.
It was a real pleasure to hear from RussFraser in Nashville, Tenn. Russ will be moving to Ann Arbor in February as professor of English and will assume the duties of chairman of the English Department at the University of Michigan beginning the fall term of 1968.
Alan Zeller became a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons recently. A card from Anchorage, Alaska, informed us that John Tower is State Chairman of the Alaska Chapter Academy of Pediatrics. It seems as if there are other Dartmouth men in Alaska as John reports that he ran into George Moerlein '52 and Al Merrill. John also serves as president elect of the Anchorage Medical Society. His wife Elizabeth is Health Officer for South Central Alaska and his son Chris is a cross country skier. To those of us living in the confines of the city this certainly sounds like a wonderfully healthy life. Getting back to more civilized areas, Bob Holmes informs us that he has been manager of the Manufacturing Services of the Superior Electric Company of Bristol, Conn. He is also a Scout Master and serves as a National Enrollment Committeeman for Dartmouth as well as secretary to the Dartmouth Club of Northwest Connecticut. That's certainly a busy schedule.
Barry Marks has been appointed chairman of the Department of English at American University in Washington, D. C., effective next fall. Presently an associate professor at Brown University, he has taught at Dartmouth, the University of Minnesota (where he earned his M.A. and Ph.D.), and the University of Lille, France. Home for Barry and Gale and their three children has been Barrington, R. 1., where he has given much time to civic affairs, acting as chairman of the State Advisory Committee of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights and the State Commission Against Discrimination.
Jake Gleber is with the engineering department of the Du Pont Company and must be close to Houston as he expresses the intention of getting to the Dartmouth Club Luncheon one of these days. Jake mentioned that he ran into Ivey Royal in San Antonio recently. Townes Harris, who must be enjoying his well earned rest from class agent duties, informs us that his daughter, Barbara was accepted at William Smith College in Geneva, N. Y. Incidentally William Smith College colors are green and white and we wonder if this influenced the choice. Arnie Weber who travels quite a bit ran into Joe Eisaman on a West Coast trip and Bill Jacobs on a Boston trip. Arnie incidentally has twin daughters, one a blueeyed blonde and one a brown-eyed bru- nette.
Bill Enright says he was elected to the Board of Governors at the State Bank of California and reports there are many '47s out his way.
The time element in writing this article is sometimes embarrassing. Just recently we wrote about Doug Burch and almost immediately after the article had gone to Hanover we heard from Doug. He is now media director of the Wilson Harrell Company, Westport, Conn. Doug is delighted to give up the commuting and who can blame him? To round out Doug (and then we won't write about him for a long time) he serves as publicity chairman for the Wilton Historical Society and served as a panelist at the 1967 Advertising Age Media Workshop in Washington. His son Chris has applied for early admission at Dartmouth. Doug also mentioned that he ran into CharlieGardner and his wife Edie in New Canaan.
We had the family skiing at Whiteface in the Adirondacks for Christmas and had a lovely chat with Walter Prager and his wife. Walter left Dartmouth about 1957 and now runs a beautiful ski shop in the Whiteface-Lake Placid area. We were glad to meet him "après skiing" as it would have been embarrassing to see him on the slopes.
Allotted space must be used up by now so it's time to sign off. It certainly is fun and interesting to hear from so many classmates. All of us can be proud of our mutual accomplishments and we know take pleasure in sharing it with each other.
