The Amazing Class of 1938's talented representative with the Hopkins Center, where he is doing a brilliant job for the College, John Scotford, turns up as a firstclass humorous author with none other than Sports Illustrated in an article entitled "The Dream Book — Spalding 1966 Edition."
In an obviously very light vein, John recounts his experiences with "Rec" football during his freshman year in Hanover. Personally, I had never realized there was such a program, but John's adventures with an ill-fitting uniform, dating back to the days of Al Marsters '30 and Swede Oberlander '26 are very amusing reading. All of which, incidentally, reflects nothing but credit on the College.
In a letter to Dan Marshall, which I am now pirating, Jim Cotter reports the elevation of Ben Ames Williams to the position of senior vice-president of the First National Bank of Boston, a financial institution infested with Dartmouth men. Jim Cotter, incidentally, is doing the plumbing for the new Hanover Inn under the Jackson Construction Company of West Newton, another Dartmouth firm. This sort of keeps things in the family.
John Fitting Jr. broke into print in the Plainfield, N. J., Courier-News when he was sworn in as a member of the New York City Youth Board. Fitting is vice-president of the Dreyfus Corporation, nationally known underwriter of the Dreyfus Fund. He joined the Dreyfus Corporation in 1957 and was made vice-president in January of 1959. Before joining Dreyfus he had been promotion manager of the Singer Manufacturing Company. During World War II he was a lieutenant commander in the Marine Corps Reserve, serving as commanding officer of a Marine fighter squadron in the Pacific.
From Chicago, Ill., to wit the South Side Real Estate Board, comes the news that Jack Mcintosh and 1966 President of Chicago's South Side Real Estate Board, has just been re-elected president for 1967, the second time in the Board's 35-year history that a president has served more than one year. Jack is a partner in the firm of Heinsimer and Mcintosh, Realtors in the Windy City, and is the proud sire of eight children at the last count.
In addition to the South Side Real Estate Board, Jack is a member of the South Side Renting Men's Association, the Chicago Real Estate Board, the Society of Residential Appraisers, the National Association of Real Estate Boards, the Chicago Real Estate Boards, and the South Shore Country Club. He has published various articles in trade journals.
Shortly after the closing of the prep schools this vacation (Christmas, that is) the Lane family paid a visit to Hanover, where young Ben had his Dartmouth Admissions interview. He is finishing up this year at Northwood School in Lake Placid, and has compiled a very commendable record. The occasion provided a very pleasant visit with the family.
Now that the skiing season is in full swing, and the Dartmouth Skiway provides an attractive and challenging run, perhaps more members of the Class will make the hegira to Hanover. Local Restauranteurs and merchants are always glad to greet the Class of 1938; so why not make the trip during the dull months?
Elsewhere in this or a subsequent issue will be found the sad news of the passing of George Waterbury. The very fitting tribute was written by Jack Hull, who knew him probably better than anyone else in the Class. He will be missed from our gatherings, as Dartmouth loses another loyal alum- nus.
