I am officially proclaiming Dick Joslin as " '53 of the Month." He has accomplished a feat that very few of our classmates have been able to do in the four years that I've written this column. He has actually written a letter to the Class Secretary! As he puts it, "After nearly fourteen years of silence, I'm responding to your appeal in the January column by taking the unprecedented (for me) step of writing a letter." Dick goes on to say that after two years of looking and eight months of detailed planning, he organized his own business, Diversiform, Inc. He resigned his position with Champion Papers, Inc. on December 31 to become a manufacturer of specialty plastics products. He has leased 16,000 square feet in Chicago and the business is on its way. There are six investors with Dick being the majority stockholder and the only one active in the business. Dick says it was a lot of fun putting the company together and is enthusiastically confident that he can handle the coming challenges. Best of luck to you, Dick, and thanks for the letter. I've almost recovered from the shock of receiving a letter from a classmate.
I may not have all my facts straight (the newspaper article was difficult to follow) but Roy Jacobsen has opened his World Wisdom Center Museum-Park in Hawaii. He exhibits the World's Wisdom literature by means of inscribed plaques hung on the walls. Roy had some trouble with zoning, but evidently his problems have been solved. Roy works for the Kauai Surf Hotel.
Preston Doane has been named manager of the Springfield, Mass., office of Shearson, Hammill & Co., the New York-based brokerage firm. Pres joined Shearson, Hammill in 1962 after working with J. D. Marsh & Associates in Washington, D. C., and prior to that the Chase Manhattan Bank in New York. Pres served from 1950 to 1954 with the U. S. Marine Corps and received the Silver Star in Korea. Tom Duke is still serving with the U. S. Air Force and was recently selected for promotion from captain to major. Tom is a special air missions pilot and flies out of Andrews Air Force Base near Washington, D. C. He is a member of the Military Airlift Command which provides global airlift for the nation's military forces.
I've had quite a bit of news these past few months on classmates in the theatrical and entertainment world. Add John Joy to the roster. He has been following a theatrical career since his discharge from the Marine Corps. He is one of the original members of the Price Street Players, a repertory group which was organized in New York City a few years ago for the purpose of producing children's musical shows. Last year, the group was engaged by WCBS-TV in New York to produce several of its shows for television. Many of you probably saw John playing the title role of "Pinnochio." He also recently appeared in "Jack and the Beanstalk."
That's all the news we could manage this month, hope to do better next month. Can do if we hear from you!
