As this is being written the football team is packing for their trip to Worcester to play Holy Cross. After a successful opener against the University of New Hampshire, Bob Blackman has been quoted as making one of the most optimistic statements in his long career in Hanover. Commenting on Playboy magazine's selection of Dartmouth to finish fourth in the Ivy League with a 5-4 record Bob said, "Playboy's figures are usually pretty good but this selection is equivalent to picking Phyllis Diller as 'Playmate of the month.' " Now to the mailbag.

American Express recently announced the election of classmate Dick Blanchard as president and a director of American Express International Banking Corporation in New York City. In Ms new position, he is responsible for the management of the banking corporation and its relations with several banking subsidiaries. Dick has been with American Express since 1952 and has held several positions in their executive office. With his wife and three daughters he lives in Convent Station, N.J.

A word of apology is due Dr. Dick Sexton. He took pity on your secretary last spring and wrote a nice letter, which was promptly mislaid. Belatedly, Dick's letter read in part as follows: "The family status remains the same number-wise, with one son finishing his sophomore year at the University of Rochester and the second son spending the calendar year as an American Field Service Exchange Student in Sydney, Australia. You may recall that at our 25th reunion we had a 'ringer' with us in the person of Tony Lins who was an American Field Service Exchange Student from Brazil spending that year with us. We had such a great time with Tony that Bill applied for and won a similar scholarship. He is having a great time playing Rugby, Australian Rules Football, tennis, track, and taking six major subjects in school there.

"I was recently elected to membership in the American Association of Plastic Surgeons which boosted my morale considerably. I am currently president of the Dartmouth Alumni Association of Rhode Island which keeps me in contact with Dartmouth in general but not '41 specifically. I do occasionally see Don Blount around Barrington and see Hyzer Jones occasionally at plastic meetings."

A summer note from Bob Thorne to Bruce Friedlich was forwarded for inclusion in this column. Bob wrote as follows: "Greetings from smoggy, dry, hot California where the hills are on fire. Except for the above, all is well here with us. I am trying to finish my angiosperm phylogeny book and worrying about my presidential address to be delivered before the American Society of Plant Taxonomists at Columbus, Ohio, in August. Except for occasional consultant trips to D. C. or Ottawa, or field trips to Baja, Calif., or about our own Alta, Calif., I don't get around much anymore. It was pleasant to see spring and the tulips come in when I was in Ottawa and Quebec back in May. Had some pleasant field trips on Santa Catalina Island and the Santa Barbara area a few weeks back connected with lecturing."

With the incorporation of Dean Witte and Company, Bill Miller became a member of the investment firm's board of directors and executive committee. A senior vice president, Bill is the manager of one of the four divisions, the Pacific Northern Division with headquarters in San Francisco. He joined the firm in 1946 and was named a general partner in 1958, resident - partner in 1961, and manager of the division in 1967. Bill is a founding member of the Street Club of San Francisco and a member of the San Francisco Bond Club.

Dr. Frank Brooks has been selected to speak at the first annual meeting of the Lahey Clinic Foundation Alumni Association to be held in Boston, Mass., this fall.

After graduation Frank studied at Dartmouth and University of Pennsylvania Medical Schools. He received his Internship and Residency training at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital, Lahey Clinic and Jefferson Medical College. A recipient of the Research Career Development Award, U.S.P.H.S., and chairman of the Steering Committee, Gastroenterology Research Group, 1968, he is on the active staff of the University of Pennsylvania Hospital where he is Chief of Gastrointestinal Section.

Frank will participate in the professional program and deliver a paper on "Tests of Gastric Function." The alumni meeting also includes panel discussions led by permanent members of the Lahey Clinic Staff in Boston.

Another clipping that apparently got mislaid late last spring reported on the recent doings of Dr. Frank Munsey in Rockford, Ill. Frank, a pediatrician, had just been elected to the Board of Directors of the Rockford United Fund. He is a director of the Children's Development Center, and a member of the school health council. During 1967 he served as president of the Winnebago County Medical Society.

It seemed like old times to receive a fist full of clippings this summer prominently featuring the name Broberg in headlines. However, it was not our Gus Broberg but his son Pete who was the subject of these articles. Pete is a 6'3", 200 lb. pitcher who has compiled quite a record for himself in "his native Palm Beach. To begin with, Pete, pitching for the Palm Beach Post 12 in the American Legion State Baseball Tournament, recorded a perfect game as his team beat Tallahassee. He faced only 27 batters, and struck out 20 of them. Obviously, his prowess on the mound had not gone unnoticed, for in the major league draft of free agents, the Oakland Athletics, who had second pick behind the New York Mets, made Pete their number one choice. Subsequent articles reported the strong rumor that Pete had been offered a hefty six-figure bonus to sign with the Athletics, but turned it down to enter Dartmouth with the Class of 1972 this fall. I haven't confirmed that Pete is in Hanover, but I certainly hope that he is.

A clipping forwarded by Red Taft brought news that could be less happy for the Big Green. Brodie Bjorklund's son Hank, who was an outstanding football player at North Shore High School on Long Island last year, has elected to go to Princeton, so we may see him running from the tailback slot for Dick Coleman in a year or two.

Herb Bailey has been named to the Board of Directors of the Muhlenberg Hospital in New Jersey. Herb is a graduate of Yale Law School and a member of the American Bar Association. He is presently employed as Assistant Treasurer of Johnson and Johnson in New Brunswick, New Jersey.

Again, regretfully, I must close this column on a sad note. Dr. George Guerrieri died Friday, September 13 in Pittsfield, Mass. The deepest sympathies of the Class are extended to his wife, Barbara, and his sons, Antonio George Jr., and David Arthur.
