I was fortunate to be back at the College November 7-9 for Club Officers' Weekend and found that things were buzzing with Third Century Fund activity, continuing turmoil with the U.G.C. and Paleop, the search for a new President, athletics, and new fraternities, courses, and professors. I sincerely hope that everyone gets a chance to visit Hanover this year particularly if you haven't gotten back to the College since graduation. The weekend was for club presidents and secretaries from across the country and I bumped into Rich Berkowitz and wife Carol representing his Dartmouth Club in Connecticut. Carol and Berkie have two daughters with a third child on the way. He's living and practicing law in Westport, Conn., and looks like he's enjoying himself. We all spent a very pleasant evening with Pete Brown and his wife who are living in Hanover. Pete returned to work with the Admissions Office. That evening we saw Bob Finney and his wife who have a young son and who have just bought one of those rolling estates near Hanover. It was quite a busy and successful weekend with the Big Green thumping Columbia on a muddy field.
Lawyer Jim Palik from Oklahoma has come east to join the patent section of the Norwich Pharmacal Company's legal department. While Jim is gaining admittance to practice before the U. S. Patent Office, he will be responsible for obtaining and protecting Norwich's trademarks and for handling foreign patent applications. Upon admittance, his responsibilities will include the full range of trademark and patent practice. A June graduate of the University of Tulsa law school, Jim and his wife Marilyn now live at 14 Francis Avenue in Norwich, N. Y.
I've been receiving complaints from some of you that I haven't spoken of my activities and family here in Philadelphia so I might as well take up a little space this month and tell you that my wife, Lillian, is taking a year's rest, more or less, before entering her residency in radiology at Germantown Hospital in Philadelphia. This year's "rest" isn't really that for she's working at least two days a week at the hospital (at a handsome salary). Our daughter, Karen, is two years old and will be neither a doctor nor a lawyer if her parents have anything to say about it. I've been practicing law for almost two and one-half years with the firm I joined when I graduated from law school. I've been specializing primarily in labor relations with a substantial bit of litigation mixed in. The firm has grown from 21 to 38 attorneys during the time I've been with them and apparently there's room for more.
I received a call from Steve Lippman who, with his wife Susan, are living in Jersey City, N. J., while he clerks for a Chancery Court Judge there. Susan still works with an advertising agency and commutes to New York each day. Steve says he enjoys the clerkship a great deal but will be ready to enter private practice next fall.
Jay Shumaker wrote to let us all know that on December 23 he'll be ending his "carefree bachelor days" when he weds Ricki Saks in Detroit, Mich. Ricki is a graduate of the University of Michigan and has taught school for several years in Michigan and California. They'll be living in Atlanta, Ga., where Jay completes his assignment with the National Communicable Disease Center. He is in the "Parasitic Disease Section of the Epidemiology Program" which seems to me to be rather awesome, worrisome, and wholly unappealing. Jay says it's really fascinating work besides being a good way to fulfil his service obligation. His address now is 2515 N.E. Expressway, T-12, Atlanta, Ga. While I'm on the subject of addresses Sam Barton reports that his address is Riveria Apartments No. 718, 4242 E.W. Highway, Chevy Chase, Md. I don't have any record on what Sam is engaged in right now but I'll bet it includes shooting some baskets.
I've received a news clipping that PeteFunke and Caryln Bruett were wed on September 21. Pete's bride is a graduate of Colby Junior College and a resident of Montclair, N. J. He's working in the Boise Cascade Corporation, I believe in New York City. While I was up in Hanover Berkie informed me that the old Schwebs, Joel Werbel, a dignified New Jersey attorney, was recently married to the former Barbara Gibson of Roselle Park, N. J. Schwebel has been practicing law in Newark for a few years after graduation from Rutgers Law School. He and Barbara are living in East Orange, N. J.
In New York Barry Linsky has joined Clairol as assistant director of marketing for the salon division. Formerly he was a product manager at Lever Brothers Company, where he was in charge of a national food brand and several new projects. He started working for Lever Brothers after receiving his M.B.A. from Tuck, and dur- ing his four years with the firm he acquired broad experience in all phases of consumer goods marketing, including advertising, promotion, sales, and acquisition work.
While I was in Hanover over the weekend, as I said I bumped into Pete Brown who is assistant to the Director of Admissions of the College. Pete and his wife returned to Hanover from Evanston, Ill., where Pete had been coaching gymnastics and teaching high school math for the past four years. After graduation he earned an M.A.T. degree from Harvard. Pete tells me that life in Hanover is quite enjoyable and pretty exciting too. He's been doing quite a bit of traveling all over the East and Mid-West. He and his wife are fixing the second bedroom of their apartment up to be a nursery and expect their baby in a few months. I'm sure that Pete would be happy to see any '63's who come through Hanover; he lives at 39 E. Wheelock Street.
That's it for this month. Watch for news of the Third Century Fund and the entire range of activities which are being planned as a result of the College's entry into its three hundreth year.
