Baron von Pechmann's hegira to Italy has to be the "event of the year," judging from all the sources from which I have received the news. The latest is from Robb Kelley in Des Moines, who also reports that "Out here in lowa James E. Cooney is in and out of the courts defending his clients and their insurance companies from the plaintiffs' bar."
Mickey, Lt. Col., USA, ret., checks in from Cape Coral, Fla., as follows: "I decided that I would rather switch than fight, so am retiring. Built a house in Cape Coral and am really looking forward to settling in one place and a home that is not G.I. issue.
"One other major news item - most people wait until they raise their children and get them through college and then retire - not the Mickey's - we adopted a baby girl who is now 16 months old - named Suzanne Bollman Mickey - she has already acquired all of Mama's good characteristics and all of Daddy's bad — so she is half sinner, half saint - but all girl.
"Intend to get into the insurance adjusting business as a second career, if it doesn't interfere with my golf and fishing. Have four bedrooms and three baths in my new shack so can accommodate any '38'ers who may stray this way."
From Fallbrook, Calif., Bill Clarke sends the following newsy letter about the doings of the Clarke family during the past year: "It has been quite a year for the Clarkes. Last Christmas found us in Guadalajara, Mexico, where we enjoyed the warm weather and hospitality of the American consul, with whom we exchanged houses. The children attended the American School, and we all made trips to nearby places of interest in that fascinating country.
"We arrived in Palo Alto for Easter, so happy to be back that we thought we'd never want to leave again. However, we soon decided that the Bay area was getting a bit. crowded and smoggy. We were all agreed that we would like more land. The acre on the hill began to seem quite crowded, since, in addition to the girls, our family now included two horses, two dogs, and two cats. After much research, we decided that the Southern California Area was most promising: land was less expensive there; sailing in the San Diego waters ideal; and Mary said she'd live anywhere an avocado tree would thrive. So, all in one week we came down to Fallbrook, Avocado Capital of the World, fell in love with the town - a delightful, small, quiet village - yet only an hour away from San Diego, two from Los Angeles, and one-half hour away from the fine, new small boat harbor at Oceanside. We bought an eight-acre avocado grove, complete with a 50-year-old farmhouse with lots of charm and no central heating. We're five minutes from the Fallbrook Riders' Club field for the girls and their horses." Sounds pretty ideal when the ground here in Hanover is covered with wet, unappetizing snow!
Bill Sherman commutes four days a week from Highland Park, Ill., to Champaign; boasts of three daughters; and has a son, Bill Jr., who might make it to Hanover.
