Midwinter seems to be the season when demands are placed upon us for income taxes (both federal and state) and donations to our college (Third Century Fund and Class of 1956 Foreign Scholarship Fund). While I realize the tax issue is mandatory, it is hoped that we can give to the college fund drives also. Bill Zales, who is heading up the Foreign Scholarship Fund drive, has asked us for our help. One beneficiary of a successful Third Century Fund drive will be a new hockey facility, which Ab Oakes informs me is most necessary if Dartmouth is to attract the talent that our competition is currently recruiting.

A recent phone call to Ab revealed that as. of January 1 the hockey team had a one win, two tie, and four loss record. It seems that the Big Green scores well but the opponents are doing the same. Ab looks for improvement as the season develops and feels there are five or six freshmen who should be able to help next year.

A recent newsclip mentions that Reverend Thomas R. Davis, Chaplain of Skidmore College, gave a talk to an alumnae group in Norwalk, Conn. Tom received a B.D. degree from Union Theological Seminary in 1960 and is working on a Ph.D. at Duke University.

Christmas cards with pictures of classmates revealed some very attractive families for Dave and Sandy Tonneson, Ab andCindy Oakes, and Fred and Jane Oman. Not having heard to the contrary and judging from the Christmas stationery, Ron Mackenzie has been re-elected to the Massachusetts State Senate. Congratulations!

One of our classmates in the financial business tells me that Roger Bensen has been recently named as Portfolio Manager for Shareholder's Management in Los Angeles. Our congratulations to Rog on this very fine appointment. I am also told that Jack Billhardt is National Sales Manager for Smith, Barney & Company.

A classmate in Kansas City writes that Lew Dail hasn't lost his golf touch as evidenced by missing qualification for the National Amateur last summer by 1 stroke. Let's hope 1969 proves to be the year that Lew qualifies. Also from Kansas City comes word that Creighton Hart has left the investment business for the teaching profession at college level in Kansas City.

Lt. Cmdr. Len Giuliani has been decorated with the Distinguished Flying Cross and Navy Commendation Medal with Combat V at Randolph Air Force Base, Texas, where he is now a Navy liaison officer. The DFC was awarded for heroism and extraordinary achievement on October 24, 1967, when he participated in an attack on a major concentration of railroad cars near Hai Duong, Vietnam. This is his fourth DFC. He earned the Commendation Medal for meritorious service on January 3, 1968, when he flew in an attack on a heavily defended highway bridge system near Hai Duong.

The Yale Dramatic Association has named Chuck Maryan as director of the Drama for the 1968-69 season. The opening production, "The Hostage" opened in November. Since leaving Dartmouth, Chuck has been production manager for 15 Broadway plays and has also directed at numerous stock and regional theaters. At the Huntington Hartford Theatre in Los Angeles, he directed Anne Jackson and Eli Wallach in "The Typist and the Tiger." From the TV industry comes word that Forrest Fraser, formerly producer-director with NBC-TV, has been appointed programming vice-president Mike Douglas and Dick Cavett shows.

Bob Montgomery writes from Denver that the local Dartmouth Association sponsored an Alumni Seminar last fall at a dude ranch in Estes Park where they talked about poetry, man's fate, and politics for two and a half days. Apparently it was a delightful experience and Bob highly recommends it for any of our local groups. Bob is practicing law in Denver and always sings the praises of that area which is always hard to deny. He mentions that Don (Shady) Lane has moved to Denver from Casper, Wyo. He is a geologist for an oil company in Denver.

Bruce Baekey is a national accounts representative for F. W. Dodge Division of McGraw Hill Information Systems Company in New York. George S. Jobson is an account executive with Merrill Lynch at their Pan Am office in New York. For nighttime diversification, he is an instructor in navigation at the Naval Reserve Officers' School. He and his wife Birgitte became parentsCaroline B. Jobson was born September 15, 1968. Josh Hill, who I presume is still recuperating from his auto accident last summer, and his wife became parents of Andrew Isaac on November 8, 1968. Robert S. Picken recently was appointed Assistant Dean of the Faculty for International Education and Associate Professor of Romance Languages at Queens College of the City University of New York.

Don't forget to send in your contributions. Until next month, best regards.
