The winter months have sent some of us in search of the sun to the south. Ray andPeg Reitman stayed at the. Coral Beach Club in Barbados where Ray enjoyed the scuba diving and practiced underwater photography. In September the Reitmans were in France, Greece, Israel, and England on a business trip to buy wines for import by his liquor distributing house, Reitman Industries of New Jersey. Their daughter, Elizabeth, recently announced her engagement to David Lowenstein of Short Hills, N.J. Elizabeth will graduate from Mills College of Education in June. David, a '67 graduate of Dartmouth, is attending the Columbia University Graduate School of Business.
From Forest Hills Gardens, Queens, comes the announcement of the engagement of Joan Lynn Beyer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.George Beyer. Joan is a graduate of Briarcliff College and attended Northwestern University. Her fiance, Brendan Crotty of Cincinnati, is a graduate of Georgetown University and is working with Procter and Gamble while studying for his master's degree at Xavier University. George is presently director of marketing at the Angostura Wupperman Corporation.
Larry Jump reports from Denver that the skiing has been excellent in Colorado since November 4. Larry was re-elected a director of the Forest Recreation Association at their convention in California in November. He is also serving as vice president of the Rocky Mountain Ski Operative Association and trustee of Colorado Ski Country, U.SA. Larry is still selling ski lifts like crazy through Mountain Lifts Corp., formerly Pomalifts, Inc.
On Pine Lake, twelve miles west of Milwaukee, Wis., this has been the first winter in a new house for Herm Nunnemacher and his family. Although this is a new house, it is an old location for Herm since it is on land his great-grandmother purchased in 1884. Pine Lake is a familiar spot for other '36ers who spent part of their youth there - Bill Niss, Bob Frank, Charles Harrison, and Art Davidson. Bob and Elizabeth Frank now reside at Lake Geneva, Wis., and his business address is Morton International Research Center, Woodstock, 111. They have two daughters; Margaret is a senior at Carleton College and Nancy attends Lake Geneva High. Charlie and Lansing Harrison are living in the Milwaukee area at Whitefish Bay. Charlie is president of Harrison Oil Co., Inc. and Engine Lubricants, Inc. The Harrisons take full advantage of the waters of Green Bay and Lake Michigan aboard their 38 foot yawl, "Victory." During the winter months you will find them curling (shades of Dean Craven Laycock) or snowmobiling at their lodge on Sturgeon Bay.
Before the books are closed on Expo 67 you should know about Bud and Joann Titcomb's trip to the Fair by boat - some 200 miles up Lake Champlain, down the Richlieu River and up the St. Lawrence to the Expo marina. The Titcombs live in Perkinsville, Vt., and Bud was consulting architect for the Vermont Pavilion at the Fair and his daughter, Andrea, was one of the charming hostesses at that Pavilion during the summer. Andrea is a graduate of Lake Erie College.
On the last business day of 1967 two Washington, D. C., industrial representatives, Barry Sullivan and Fred Gonnerman, met for lunch. This has become a minor tradition for them, as has the scramble for the check. Barry and his wife, King, are enmeshed in the college routine with son, Bob, a sophomore at Randolph-Macon and son, Charles, busily filing applications for next fall. Their third son, Roger, is still in grammar school. Barry occasionally sees BillYelverton, associate editor for Kiplinger Publications, which many of us read faithfully these days. Bill is also the father of three sons. Bill Jr. is a graduate of the University of North Carolina while Peter earned his degree from Vanderbilt. John is presently a senior at the University of North Carolina.
On the front page of the January 1 issue of Advertising Age Bob Prentice was in the heady company of Mary Wells and Betty Furness among "ten who made advertising news in 1967." Bob, as Lever Bros, director of marketing information, led an industry survey which found that too many clients were lousing up their advertising and their agencies. The client was also the biggest obstacle to better advertising. The advertising fraternity says, "Amen." Bob and Theo were in Europe last year for a look at Rome and a visit to Lever Bros, parent organization in London, Unilever. Their son, David, is a junior at Dartmouth.
While we are braving the gusts of March winds, our fearless leader, Gil Balkam, has taken himself and his wife, Fran, to Miami Beach to attend a national meeting of the Chemical Industry Credit Association. While Gil is comparing Receivables turnover with his financial counterparts, Fran will, no doubt, find three bridge players in search of a fourth. A few familiar faces have stared out of the financial pages recently. Ken Wilson, chairman of the AVCO Corp. has been elected a director of the Paul Revere Life Insurance Co. and the Paul Revere Variable Annuity Insurance Co. Dick Brierley, vice president of the Drackett Company, a subsidiary of the Bristol-Myers Co., has been transferred to the staff of the parent with responsibility for Javex Company Limited, Bristol-Myers Company of Canada, Ltd. and Drackett Company. No mention was made as to the location of Dick's new headquarters, but he will undoubtedly be spending more time travelling particularly in Canada.
Bob Eaton has taken on the added responsibility of registrar at Nichols College of Business Administration in Dudley, Mass. Bob has been Dean of Men at Nichols and his son, Stewart, expects to graduate from that institution in June. Bob and Caroline have a daughter, Carol Ann, who graduated from Endicott Junior College in 1965.
Elizabeth Wood, widow of Dave Wood, is still living in Grand Rapids, Mich. Their three children have done well in school. Betty is presently a senior at the University of Michigan where her brother, Douglas, earned his B.A. and M.B.A. from the Graduate School of Business Administration. Lt. David Wood has been a Navy officer since graduating from Ohio State as an engineer. A recent letter from Ina Smith Laidlow of Clinton, N. Y., widow of Steve Smith, disclosed that their son, Steve, has been working for Mohawk Airlines in Boston since his graduation from Dartmouth in 1965.
As this is written, the Chinese are celebrating the beginning of 4666 which might look like Chairman Mao's zip code, but it actually is the Chinese new year, the year of the monkey. This could apply to the U.S.A. in this election year - there's plenty of meaningless chatter in the air. If you aren't in the race, put your chatter on paper and send it to me.
