Class news has changed from a drought to a flood - which means I must leave the full story of '27's Man of the Year dinner for Doane Arnold to Bill North's next issue of the "Speak."

Quickly, however, almost 60 classmates and wives gathered at N. Y. "D" Club on April 9 for a great evening. Hank Murray opened proceedings, after a good informal warm-up session in the bar, with a showing of a selection of his slides taken all over Europe in connection with his educational film projects. Hank accompanied his great pictures with comments which made all ask why he didn't go on the lecture circuit.

While Barbara Bartlett circulated SmithySmith's drawing of Doane for autographs, Charlie Bartlett performed the class honors in introducing Doane. His response, as predicted, was most entertaining and ended with a serious note on inflation and a well phrased plea to all of us to exert our influence in fighting for its control. Doane's many years of service to the college and the class was further recognized by a collection of messages which Chairman Don McCall compiled and presented to Doane. A memorable '27 occasion.

Another evidence that '27 is a great class came from Phil Fowler who sent me a letter published in "The Dartmouth" April 8, entitled, "Black Graduate Urges Afro-Ams to Make Ability our Criterion." It was from '27's Lowell Wormley to William McCurine '69 of Hanover's Afro-American Society and had originally appeared in "The Arizona Republic." Lowell's statement strongly questioned the black campaign for lower standards and has produced many letters of commendation. I am forwarding it to BillNorth for I am sure you all will want to read it. A note of congratulations to Lowell requesting an opportunity to see some of the reactions his letter produced, brought a number of replies which I am also forwarding to Bill for extracting.

In '27's honoring Doane, our long-time secretary, we missed Coggy Broer, his successor for some ten years. This was due to Coggy's having suffered a heart attack a week or so before. Last night I called and talked first to Sue, then to Coggy himself. He has been home approximately a week — will be home bound for quite some time, but you will be glad to hear that he sounded quite chipper and is hoping to get back to work. Coggy, take it easy - cash in a diamond now and then and forget the store for a while.

Howie Mullin, Pres., had to miss the Arnold party too. Was off on some junket. Heard from him from California, last from Pittsburgh. Howie reports that George Provost has been named Sesquicentennial General Chairman of the West Liberty Presbyterian Church - quite an honor for Elder Provost. George, says Howie, has just returned from a second honeymoon. Congratulations, George! Who's the lucky girl, and I promise not to repeat your quote re second honeymoons. Howie says he is back at the stand in Chicago.

Note that Gordon Smitty Smith is having a one-man art show in Marblehead. Wrote Kay Gardner and asked her to represent the class and send in a review.

Tom Gillespie says University Glee Club (NYC) honored Doc Greener with a "This is your life" Program - Ted Girault and Alan Welty added '27 touches. Doc, in response, led some 60 associates in the singing of "Eleazar Wheelock."

Bill Pelton: "Income Tax and birthday in one week is almost too much; I'd like to forget them both."

Ken Yeaton's firm, Yeaton & Yeaton Real Estate in New Jersey, just celebrated their fortieth anniversary.

Ted Selig sends nice letter from Grapetree Bay, St. Croix. He has recently been promoted to V.P. for Research and Development for Burnham Corp. and transferred to Lancaster, Pa. -Ted and Dorothy, after seeing St. Croix with Jack Barr '49, were on to San Juan for a meeting.

Dick Fox from Sarasota, Fla., reports seeing Al and Edna Mac Donald occasionally and was looking forward to a visit from Ross Guyot - also sees Dot Cleaveland who has a place in Clearwater. This is also confirmed by a nice long letter from AI Mac Donald who says the visit from Ross resulted from Mac's name in these columns. (Plug - you write too.) He further inquires why Joe (speed writer) Russakoff appears no longer in these columns. Let's ask him. Why, Joe? Sykes Hardy also in Florida recovering from surgery - hope all is well, Sykes.

Ken Murdoch and Faye moving to California this May - to Lake San Marcos as a better climate for his asthma. Mike andGertrude Choukas are back in Rye, N. H., for the summer, but Mike has taken a post in sociology at Pierce College, Athens, so back to Greece next winter.

Dana and Verna Condon (l) of Guatemala City welcome visitors Mary and OsSkinner for a'28 get-together.
