To catch up on the accumulation of summer news. Ken and Ruth Murray back for Alumni College this August - hopefully looking over talent for some of our 40th events. Bob Stevens at Timber-Hole Farm, his place in Londonderry, Vt., for a whole month.

Marion and I had a great trip and a chance of a life-time experience this summer. Went West, while in Los Angeles called Duke Coulter — wanted to thank him for his nice note, reporting retirement as delightful — heading for Hawaii this fall and with Sonia planning, of course, on Hanover for the 40th. We flew on to Honolulu where our 48 hours only left no chance to get together with Chuck Brewster. Boarded a 50-foot motor sailer with owner, his wife and daughter, and after a day in Kauii, the five of us brought it across the Pacific to Seattle - 2500 miles, 16 days and great!

Drove from Seattle to Portland where Sam and Ellen Martin (Sam is Dartmouth's Mr. Oregon) gave us a great evening. Found that Sam and I were both Army brats, he born in Philippines, with yours truly just making it off the boat to be born on native soil. Sam's father went on to a distiguished career as a member of Congress and Governor of Oregon. Sam has been enrolling for Hanover for years and is sending on a freshman quarterback this fall who threw 21 touchdown passes his last year in high school! The Martins are planning on the 40th and on to Europe afterwards if Ellen can make the sale.

On to Corvallis where I called John Pfanner -but being a beautiful Saturday morning, I got no answer as I expected.

Drove down the Oregon coast and on to San Francisco over the weekend - don't miss it if you have the chance. Bruce McKennan was about to leave for Los Angeles so we missed him and Phyrne. Bill Abbott and his good wife, Jeane, entertained Marion and me and a business friend at the new Top of the Fairmount which tops the Top of the Mark, and then to "Ernie's" for a very fine dinner. Bill was off the next day to Portland for the West Coast Senior Golf Tournament and had just sharpened his game with a 70 something score. Trust he brought back some silver. Incidentally, we made it home finally, air strike notwithstanding.

Johnny Rintels - Defense Department Director of Mobilization Readiness - led a conference of some 1500 business men at Hunger College early this summer. Joe Russakoff submitted N. Y. Times picture of Johnny and story of the event.

Don (Sail-Ski) Gardner reported July cruise to Maine with plans to proceed on the Passamaquoddy Bay. Instead of being able to join them, "Caribou" lay in harbor while we Pacificked!

Gil Gilbert has been appointed SE and Florida Reunion Transportation Chairman with great ideas of a private railway car with copious bar at one end, gathering up the brethren at way stations as it proceeds on its way from Southern Florida to New Hampshire. For early reservations, write Gilly - 7115 Palm Ave., Sarasota, Fla.

You know, '27ers, under Sam Wormser and a long list of devoted class agents and a longer list of devoted classmates, brought '27 a lot of Green Derby glory and came within an ace of the top spot. Sam justly deserves the accolade as v.p. of Class Agents Association, that means if precedent is any precedent he will be elected president of this body and Lee Greenbaum (v.p. this year) will also be president of the Bequest Chairmen's Association another year. Yours truly was honored by being advanced (very automatically) to president of Secretaries Association for 1967.

Hitch Hitchcock kindly sent a full report on a spring trip: "After five days' driving through Holland, I would love to charter and sail the canals. I understand it is still pretty cheap and the Dutch still do make the best cookies and beer in the world. With some patience, you can develop a taste for Geneva gin at 25¢ a shot in the good restaurants and that way you can average your costs." The Hitchcocks also took in France, England, and Denmark for a great trip.

Len Dunn, '27's Arizona agent, reports a great life - twelve months a year golf and blooming flowers. Has a son nearby and daughter, Susan, at University of New Mexico. Len, we want the full Arizona story at the 40th.

Early 40th reservations include FrankCloran with an order for wheel chair, hearing aid, and Geritol, and Rudy Preuss who asks for Scotch instead of beer and only moderate bedlam. Rudy just got back from Hanover where he witnessed the demise of the Inn: "What fond memories - Hanover hot and muggy and everybody needs a haircut or a shave."

Doc Milliken enjoyed the New York '27 dinner so much he is planning on Fall Reunion — will be his first time back in 15 years.

Hale Ham acknowledges birthday note with 40th Reunion flash with the good word that he and Fanny have put it on their 1967 schedule.

Newspaper clipping announced the resignation of Al Lawrence as Dean of New York State Maritime College on July 1. Wrote him for his plans - will report his reply.

Charley Bartlett was recently re-elected president of the Boston Bar Association - renewing this signal honor.

'27's distinguished members of the legal profession continue in the news - DudBonsai is judge on the SEC - Texas Gulf Sulphur case.

Bill Sprague in late spring was elected president of International Harvester Credit Corp.

Gus Cummings again made the papers on the occasion of ground-breaking ceremonies for a new Koppers plant near Baltimore-Washington Friendship Airport.

More news next issue after we get firsthand information from '27ers back for Phil Fowler's Fall Jamboree. Hope you will have been there.
