We have a goodly amount of material gathered over the summer month, so we'll just dig in and bring you up-to-date. In the unfinished business department, you might recall our recounting an election eve item on Sam Lawton out in Highland Park, Ill. We predicted a victory for Sam, even though our information had not disclosed the title of the office for which he was running. Turns out it was for mayor, and he did win. But now we have information that indicates he resigned his recently won post on July 31, along with a membership in his law firm to accept an appointment by Governor Richard Ogilvie to the newly created Illinois Pollution Control Board. In the same department, we refer you to an item in our June column about a legal case in Manchester, N. H., that involved a bunch of Dartmouth lawyers, highly spiced with '39ers. Tom Brooks writes to say that his married daughter Judy was the secretary to Freddie Upton's son, who was mentioned as one of principals on the case. Get it? Without a doubt it must have been the "greenest" case in the U.S.A. Tom also mentions that the JULY 16 issue of Life has interest for the class. The one with the picture of the handsome gal pictured in front of a vacation house on Caspian Lake, Greensboro, Vt. Well that house was built by Hank Merrill. How about that?
Moving into June we note that the formation of the Farnell Textile Associates Inc. took place in Charlotte, N. C. FrankFarnell, the establisher, has been in the textile industry for 25 years, in Boston, NYC and in Charlotte for the past thirteen. The firm will act as a consultant and sales organization in textiles and related fields. Frank and Barbara are twice grandparents via their second daughter Jean, living in York, Pa. Eldest daughter Marilyn is a biologist with EDC making educational films in the biological field out of Boston, and son Bruce was, when last reported, deciding between the service and college after gathering in his high school diploma. Some of our class officers were busy in June. Treasurer Sam Thurm stepped down as president of the American Advertising Federation with an appropriate speech. He was pictured in a "Jimmy Durante" pose on the front page of "Advertising Age," the industry bible. Incidently, Sam's new address is 390 Park Ave., N. Y„ N. Y. 10022. BertMacMannis with wife Sally, played the ugly American in Spain and Portugal, relaxing to such a degree that he turned on neither radio, TV, nor consumed the local press. It figures. He couldn't understand the language. Ev Woodman was the featured speaker at his daughter June's graduation at Walnut Hill School, in Natick, Mass. And finally, a book entitled "Militarism, USA" was published under the authorship of Col.James A. Donovan USMC (Ret.) with a foreword by Gen. David Shoup, USMC (Ret.), the former Marine Corps Commandant.
July saw the return of Al Ley from a tenmonth tour of duty as Chief of Staff of the "S. S. Hope" on a Tunisian mission. It also saw the appointment of Herb Hirschland, to the Board of Directors of the Chemists Manufacturing Association. Herb is the president of M & T Chemicals, Inc. and gained his new honor at the 98th annual meeting of the chemical association in White Sulphur Springs. The MCA represents 90% of the production capacity of the nation. Herb's new home address is 295 Newtown Tpke., Wilton, Conn. 06897. The appointment of AI Lansberg as treasurer of Wm. Underwood Co., producers of specialty canned foods in Watertown, Mass. (Underwood Deviled Ham and Spread, and B & M New England Brick Oven Baked Beans and Brown Bread—Yum, Yum, Yum) was announced on July 2. Al has served as treasurer of Plax Corp. in Hartford, Conn., VP of Finance at Knox Glass Inc., Knox, Pa. and more recently corporate assistant treasurer for Standard Brands Inc., NYC.
We have one item that belongs with August. Shag Hatch is the new music director at the Tutu School in Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas, Virgin Islands. Sounds like nice work if you can get it in one of the world's garden spots.
