Jon Anderson is trying to bring order out of academic chaos—the administrative kind, not violent. At Cornell University, Jon was formerly head of the systems office and now is assistant to a new vice president for administration who's seeking economies in the university's $160-million operations. "To measure our activities and performance in terms of dollars, we have to ask some questions that haven't been asked before," says Jon. "Up to now, the squeaky wheel has gotten the grease. Now we're looking at program budgeting, cost accounting and such things. But we have to go at this in a quiet way, because it can get people very excited—if a professor doesn't have many students in his class, for instance. Cornell has always been all things to all people, and as a result we've just grown and grown. We've got to put a collar on this now." Jon is also heading Ithaca's United Fund campaign this fall.
