Happy 1970's! I hope some of you have made a resolution to keep your secretary posted on your activities somewhat more than you did in the late lamented 1960's. Already there is some indication of improvement.

Red O'Connor provided an update on his recent activities via a letter, part of which follows: "I have been quite active lately in the legislative field in several respects. As the representative of Council's Consultant Group on Regulatory Legislation, I have recently prepared for printing by the National Health Council and for release to its member agencies a compilation and analysis of state statutes and local ordinances regulating the solicitation of funds for charitable purposes. As a result of my experience in this field, I have recently testified on this subject before committees of the state Legislatures of Wisconsin, Massachusetts, and Pennsylvania and appeared before the City Council of the City of Tulsa, Okla. I have also drafted for the legislatures of Nebraska, Wisconsin, and Massachusetts proposed model statutes regulating the solicitation of funds for charitable purposes.

"Recently I also testified before a Congressional Committee in Washington upon the effect of increased postal rates on solicitation mailings by charitable organizations. My recent extracurricular activities have included a term as president of our local Parent-Teachers Association and two terms as president of our local Civic Association."

Lt. Col. Dick Jachens sent a Christmas card from his new post in Stuttgart, Germany, with a brief report: "Family and I transferred from Korea to Germany in September via a leave in the States. Hated to leave my command in Korea which was great and interesting duty. My family also enjoyed the exposure to life in Korea. Am now just another staff officer at headquarters, European Command near Stuttgart. The travel opportunities are great. We head for Garmisch and skiing next week. Ginny has already been to Rome and Berchtesgaden with Catholic women's groups. Have two children in the U.S. Chuck, my stepson, is a freshman at U.N.C. and Patty gets her Master's degree at Rutgers next month."

George Cruze was recently named business manager of the Capital Gazette Press, Inc., publishers of the Evening Capital, the Capital Gazette News and the Prince Georges County News in Maryland. For the past six years George has been director of publications for Pioneer Publisher Co., publishers of 22 newspapers in and around Chicago. Prior to that he was advertising director of the Burlington Free Press for nine years. Previously he had served as retail advertising manager of Tarentum, Pa., Valley Daily News and as general advertising representative for the Indianapolis Times. George and his wife Ruth have three children, George III, 22; Eleanor, 20; and Barbara Ann, 14.

Ray Hayes, manager of the health claim department of the State Mutual Life Assurance Company of America in Worcester, Mass., has been elected president of the New England Claim Association for the 1969-70 term. NECA is an association comprising insurance companies writing health and life insurance. Ray has been with State Mutual since 1958.

The Union Trust Company of Washington, D.C., last November elected George Flather senior vice president and trust officer.

Hank Frechette, president and chairman of the board of Kingsbury Machining Tool Corp. of Keene, N.H., has been named to the board of directors of O.K. Tool Co. of Milford, N.H.

Bob O'Brien was recently elected a director and senior vice president of Marsh & McLennan, Inc., international insurance brokers and employee benefits consultants. Bob joined the company in 1946, was made manager of the pension department in 1950 and elected a vice president in 1955. Since 1958 he has been in charge of the Boston office of the firm. In addition to his business interests, Bob is a vice president and director of the Greater Boston YMCA and president of the Arlington Savings Bank.

So starts the new decade. It will also end here if someone doesn't write soon.
