Well, National Groundhog Day has come and gone, Spring is just around the corner, a welcome change for many, particularly those of us intrepid suburbanites dependent on commuter lines. For the next several months, at least, we can await the daily but invariably tardy "cannonball" without fear of frost bitten toes, ears, and noses. Not much consolation, perhaps, but certainly an improvement over this winter's results.

Maybe Gary McKee has the whole thing solved. According to Axel L. Grabowsky '60 Gary was recently elected president of the Dartmouth Club of Mexico for 1970. Gary is vice president of Denny's de Mexico, S.A. de C.V., one of the country's largest restaurant chains. He joined Denny's a little over a year ago, having owned his own restaurant, "a beautiful colonial affair with outstanding fare in San Miguel Allende, one of the most historic towns in Mexico." If any of you venture south of the border I'm sure Gary would be happy to demonstrate his culinary arts for you. He and his wife Celia live in Mexico City with their two sons and a daughter.

Of course planning and completing a trip to Mexico, or any other place for that matter, are two different things. What you have to do is sock something away and let it grow. The fellow to help you out is Dewalt H. Ankeny Jr., who last September was elected a vice president-Trust investments at the First National Bank of Minneapolis. Walt joined First Minneapolis in 1967 as an A. V. P. in the Trust and Investment Management group. Prior to joining the bank he was with the Theo. Hamm Brewing Company. Walt holds an M.B.A. from the Tuck School of Business Administration and both his education and experience must be getting a real workout in this roller coaster stock market.

The Vietnam War continues to cross the lives of some of our classmates even though the hardship is most often mentioned in connection with men a half-generation behind. One such is Major Levi Goldfarb, an Air Force career man and father of four, three sons and a daughter. Last August Levi volunteered for duty in Vietnam after completing a three-year hitch in Intelligence at the Pentagon. The Goldfarbs were active in community affairs in their home city of Camp Springs, Md., and were members ot the Sharu Fikvah Synagogue one of the South's oldest dating its origins to pre-Civil War days. Unfortunately, the building was seriously damaged by bombing and Levi spent considerable time helping in its restoration. In addition to his tour at the Pentagon, Levi also has served in the Philippines, Crete, and West Germany, and while at the latter station received a master's degree by mail from a southern university.

From Brockton, Mass., comes word that Herbert F. Bates Jr., was appointed manager-budget and costs at New England Mutual Life Insurance Co., in Boston. His new position will make Herb responsible for the areas of payroll administration, accounts payable and progress sharing accounting. Herb joined New England Life in 1965 as a budget analyst, moving up to supervisorbudget and costs department in 1968. He makes his home in Brockton where he resides with his wife Marie and their two children, Joyce and David.

Three thousand miles west Michael Marx, Ph.D. was appointed department head in basic research of the Syntex Research Institute of Organic Chemistry. Dr. Marx came to Syntex Research Institute in 1967 as a chemist and has been involved in a variety of projects in medicinal chemistry. After Dartmouth, Dr. Marx spent nine years at Lederle Laboratories doing research in steroids and antibiotics. He received his doctorate from Columbia University in 1966 and did post-doctoral research at Stanford under Professor Carl Djerasi, president of Syntex Research. A member of the American Chemical Society, The Chemical Society (London), and the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Dr. Marx makes his home in Sunnyvale, Calif., with his wife, Janet, and son David.

And a few months ago, from the middle of the land, O. C. Carmichael, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Associates Investment Co., announced that J. William Petty was named to the newly created post of vice president-marketing. In his new position Bill will be responsible for all marketing, advertising and public relations for the parent and all its subsidiaries. For the prior thirteen years Bill worked extensively in all phases of marketing and advertising at Procter and Gamble. Bill is a Marine Corps veteran and has an MBA from Tuck School. He also served as secretary and president of the Dartmouth Alumni Club of Cincinnati and in 1968 was chosen President-of-the-Year by the Dartmouth National Alumni Club. Bill has also worked in fund raising for the Boy Scouts, the United Fund, and the Fine Arts Fund. Bill, his wife Carolyn, and their four children now make their home in South Bend, Ind.

Well, we'll close this month with another request for news just to be consistent. I'm beginning to think that no one reads this column, or at least through to the end.
