James Brown, a 6-1 guard from New York City, has proven himself to be a "winner" for the freshman basketball team. He averaged over 30 points in 15 games as the Little Indians built a 12-3 record, and he had a record 52 points in a thrilling 101-99 win over the Harvard freshmen. Brown has had valuable support from forwards Bill Martin and Robin Derry and Coach Bob McAteer has come up with a durable rebounder in Mike Saville and an exciting high-jumping guard in Mike Sansouci from St. Louis.
Coach Grant Standbrook's freshman hockey team has an identical 12-3 record. No less than nine players have scored at least 20 points and the best indication of the offensive punch of the Little Indians is that they've had 820 shots on goal in 15 games while goalies Pete Proulx and Jim Kallestad have faced only 358 shots. The freshmen have scored 117 goals (better than 10 a game) and Dave Sullivan from West Newton, Mass., is the top scorer with 39 points, including 21 goals. Forwards Bill Berry, Dave Walkom, Chet Homer, and Captain Dana Johnson all have scored at least 30 points.
With three meets remaining, Dartmouth's freshman swimmers had a 6-1 record, losing only to Harvard in a meet that was decided in the final relay. Steve Quigley, the freshman captain who came to Dartmouth without a high school swimming background (he was a top New England AAU swimmer for the Marblehead YMCA), broke the freshman record in the 500 freestyle set four years ago by the 1969 captain, Terry Robinson, with a time of 5:07.1. Craig Colberg has become a strong freestyle sprinter while Don Reynolds also has excelled in the longer freestyle events. Tom Beckmann has lost only one race in seven starts in the 200 backstroke while Bill Lehman and Bob Jones are promising prospects in the breastroke and butterfly. In freshman squash, Captain Doug Donahue from Norwell, Mass., has built a 5-3 record in the No. 1 position but the Pea Green has managed to win only two of eight matches. Al Pfister, John Hauge, and Barry Jones are the other top performers.
The weightmen on the freshman track team have been as competitive as their varsity counterparts. Ted Moody's brother, Wayne, has been in a running battle with John Liebert for the freshman shotput record. Moody held it after eight dual meets (of which the frosh won seven) as he launched a 51 foot, 9 inch effort against Vermont. Captain George Leach from Melrose, Mass., looks to be a top high jump prospect with a best effort of 6 feet, 6 inches against Colgate. Larry Krol and Bob Varsha are solid middle-distance performers in the 1000 and mile.
Walt Sustek and Steve Morelli are the top freshman wrestlers along with Wayne Gregg and Ted Thompson, the captain from Dayton, Ohio. Thompson has a 4-0 record while Sustek stands 4-1 for the freshmen who have lost two of four matches by two and three points.
Freshman guard James Brown has averagedover 30 points in 15 games andhad a record 52 against the Harvardfreshmen.
