In recent years, we have tried to spend some time in Florida. This gives us an opportunity to meet again with classmates who reside here permanently, as well as to mingle with the vacationers like ourselves. We are amazed to observe the ever-increasing numbers of Dartmouth alumni in the state.
Monty Mountcastle '22, proprietor of a pleasant resort at Fort Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, provides headquarters for the Dartmouth Club of that area. At a luncheon meeting held on February 3 in Fort Lauderdale, the following contemporaries were present: Tom Jones, Reed Montgomery, Cliff Daniels, all of '18, Hi Abraham and Milford Streeter '16 and three-letter Bud Hoban '12.
We found Don and Lucy Litchard basking in the warmth of Boca Raton. When the wives stopped for breath, they could hear the '17ers recalling their problems with chemistry and the tolerance of Prof. Bobby Bartlett. Don was having trouble with sciatica which we hope is now much better.
Rock Hayes '19 and his wife, Alice Earle, have been lured to Delray by the charms of the Southland, aided perhaps by classmate George Rand and Marion, who are already settled in this delightful area.
When we reached the Gulf Coast, one of our first activities was attending the annual meeting of the Dartmouth Club of St. Petersburg on February 13. Following the luncheon, about 70 members, guests, and wives heard an address by Dean Hennessey of Tuck School. After extolling the leadership of the past under our able John Sloan Dickey, he tried to forecast the changes which are bound to come in the new era under President-elect Kemeny. His talk left in the minds of the older graduates the hope that the apparent irresponsibility of today's college youth in this "age of discontinuity" will not minimize the need for the alumni to perpetuate the love of Dartmouth as a college.
George Gregory, we are pleased to note, appears to be improved in health. Unfortunately Gertrude was ill in the hospital but expecting to be out soon.
Your secretary was saddened to find no improvement in Gil Swett, and little hope for any. Jane is to be commended for the courage with which she is facing this difficult situation.
It was about a year ago that we lost our beloved Sumner Emerson. In meeting with Charlotte, we found her strong and forwardlooking, with a philosophy of life which could be strengthening to us all. She sends her best wishes to her many friends in '17.
Leon and Minnie Cone have been happily located in Sun City, Fla., for the past six years. A community of 3500 there offers remarkable opportunities for the rejuvenation of one's talents both physical and mental. Pauline Hutchins and her daughter, Mrs. Armstrong, are spending the winter months on Siesta Key. While Pauline, unfortunately, will not be able to attend our fall reunion, she sends remembrances to '17.
It is with sadness that we report the passing of our classmate, Emerson C. Ward. As soon as more information is available, an obituary will be provided. The Class extends its deepest sympathy to his wife and family.
