At this rather late date, your secretary is reporting on his vacation in the Southland and the meetings with classmates and other alumni. Our timing in Fort Lauderdale did not include a meeting of the Dartmouth Club there, but we did contact its president, Monty Mountcastle '22 who was recovering from a brief stay in the Holy Cross Hospital. Bob Scott's health has improved sufficiently to enable him to get back to a regular golf schedule at the Coral Ridge Club. It was pleasant to see Pauline Hutchins and JaneSwett in Sarasota. Pauline is an avid bridge player, and enjoys her membership in the Gulf and Bay Club, near her home. Jane is considering early retirement from her work as secretary of the Unitarian Church in Sarasota, so that she can devote more time to social work and the theatre.
Don Solis '28 president of the Dartmouth Club of Sarasota, was as gracious as usual in extending a welcome to your secretary. Not only does Don chair the club in Sarasota twice a month but also serves as treasurer of the Ivy League Club of that city, a gathering place for 600 alumni of various Eastern colleges for inspiration and refreshment - twice monthly. A namesake, Burton L. How sat near me at such a luncheon. I questioned his identity because his name tag was spelled HOWE - (E incorrect). "Skin" as he was known in college days, had a hard time remembering any of us except KarlThielscher, Sandy Lynch, and George Allison. He explained this by stating that he remained at Dartmouth for only two years, receiving his degree from the University of Chicago. Those classmates who remember him will recall his interest in track while a freshman.
A sad note to report is the passing of classmate Donald O'Leary of Damariscotta, Me. Our friendship with Don goes back some 63 years, when we lived freshman year in Reed Hall. Tribute will be given to him in the obituary column of this Magazine.
You '17ers still have time to sign up for the Post 50th Reunion in Hanover, June 14-16. It will make a good prelude to a major gathering in 1977.
Jake and Marian Bingham '18 with thetray Kappa Kappa Kappa awarded him inhonor of his "Unequalled Dedication."
