Realizing that a breathless world is waiting to hear who won the priceless prize of a half gallon of Vermont maple syrup I confirm that it was Walt Daley of Pelham Manor, N. Y. Looking deeply into his private crystal ball he came up with the correct answer that Richard James White Jr. of East Lynne, Mass., was the first-born of the ten who had birthdays in April.

Walt is now ineligible to try for the second half gallon offered in our May notes but if you like pancakes, why not try your luck? With only eight born in May even a blind guess may prove rewarding and even 25 words of news puts you in the running.

June birthdays, by the way, include those of Bill Breslin of Rutherford, N. J., Harry Cook of Tarrytown, N. Y., Howard Fahey of Dunedin, Fla., Harry Morse of Uleah, Calif., and Win Snow of Epping, N. H.; to each every good wish!

Reading Walt Daley's letter written after he had pruned his roses, fertilized his lawn and watered his seedlings I note his comment that though he had always understood in educational circles that the elite in graduating classes received Bachelor of Art degrees none of our ten April-born appears to have done so. One may surmise correctly that Walt is one of the elite of 1914.

In total contrast to Walt's peaceful pursuits today in 1917 Walt was a pursuit pilot in the U.S. 638th Aero Squadron of the Fifth Pursuit Group with twelve months of service in France and Germany.

In the April 13 issue of the Congressional Record is a noteworthy tribute to HerbertAustin as one of Massachusetts' outstanding newspapermen quoting in full a feature story of the National Newspaper Association on Herb's nomination as the nation's "Editor of the Week."

Word comes that Herb's daughter Judith is to be married in June. A graduate of New Hampshire University with a master's degree from Yale in Religious Education Judith has spent 25 years in student work most of it in YWCA and for the past eighty years as executive secretary of the YWCA at the University of Hawaii.

Speaking of weddings and hoping that our limited notes are correct, June 18 should mark the 50th wedding anniversary of Matand Jean Hallett of Charlotte, N. C., and June 22 the golden day of Paul and DorothyHowe of Corning, N. Y.

A year ago the drums were thumping a world-wide call to our 55th reunion in Hanover. It is too late to remind you now of a more modest reunion in Hanover the weekend of May 15-17 but let's hope that it brought out all who could attend.

Another break in our ranks must be reported in the death on April 21 of CharlesW. Smedley, age 79 of New Britain, Conn. A distinguished newspaper editor and reporter whose life will be more fully reported in this or a later issue.
