Gollee! How tempus fugits! Here we go into a new year and this scribe has hardly survived the old one—with all its shenanigans. Anyway, here goes!
George Martin periodically comes up with miscellaneous information about what goes on in Boston and environs. Referring to the Brown and Penn games, he marvels at the second and third string players injected into both games to enhance those victories. All told, George took in quite a number of last fall games. And he got quite a kick out of- a candle-lit surprise party the gang put on for his 77th birthday. He reveals that Chan Foster's daughter, who is working for Chan's old concern, says Chan still goes out to the country club quite occasionally. George further revealed that Norvie Milmore is not particularly keen on apartment life since he sold his big house. George is very busy at his store—his bookkeeper was laid up for eight weeks and the "manpower fill-in was little better than nothing." Anyway, George sent his best wishes "from us New Englanders" - which was quite pleasing to us "died-in-the-wool" New Yorkers!
In a similar manner, Eben Clough passes on to us the interesting doings of '15ers in that part dominated by the Dartmouth Club. The Kike Richardsons and the George Martins provided a pre-game gathering reminiscent of the days of yore. A listing of those present would fill this column. An interesting sidelight was the presence of Tony, "a lovely lady of 94 years"—plus a vivacious 18-month-old blond grandson of the Martin clan and due for the Class of 1988 at Dartmouth! To this scribe who used to take in these pre-game parties in Boston the account was quite nostalgic! Eben further expressed humble thanks for the "red carpet wrapped around us all during that festive occasion." He also enclosed an article by Eva Clough Speare, "a lovable cousin 95 years young" who writes for the Manchester Union most every day and "gets paid for it!"
Bob Fredericks phoned back in late October to report AOK and looking for any news of '15ers. He was told they were either still vacationing or recuperating therefrom, said he was awaiting next column and handed the writer a "pat on the back."
George Dyke phoned about the meeting October 14 in New York and was sorry this scribe couldn't make it due to a previous appointment with an MD. Pete Pray also phoned, rooting for a clean slate for Dartmouth football. His rooting sure did the trick! A card from the StringDownings tells of a week in Bermuda—"plenty of rum and bikinis but what can a guy like me do about it!" A clipping recently received reports that Yale will meet Dartmouth in football at Hanover in 1971 for the first time away from New Haven. We can't wait! And a belated phone call reports that Kike Richardson attended all nine Dartmouth football games last fall and George Martin attended seven. Lucky dogs! George Dyke further revealed a late November trip out West where the snow was becoming a daily occurrence and, not being too well equipped, they decided to come on back home. A later note from Eben Clough says Doc Noyes has a new motto; "Vox Clamantis in Hospitalis—a voice to be heard in hospitals!" At last report, Doc was at the Jordan Hospital, Plymouth, Mass., and a note from Classmates would be welcome.
With which, as a windup, may we quote a slight dissertation appearing in a recent newspaper: "There is pro football. There is college football. There is Ivy League football. And Dartmouth out-Ivies the Ivy!"
