March! May it herald an early spring! And a welcome discarding of mufflers, sweaters, and heavy underwear! Would that it could also eliminate the rising cost of living - stationary pensions - non-existant salaries - questionable Social Security benefits-and what-not! What does a retiree do? Punt?
George Ingalls in Boulder, Colo, reports spending the holidays in the Chicago area where he put in considerable time shoveling out relatives' driveways and sidewalks. An enclosed photo depicted a lush and spectacular country-side view from his living room window - even with the thermometer at zero!
Somebody sent in this quote from Cardinal Newman - which is reassuring: "What is second best is practically best, because what is really best is unattainable." CalebRogers, up at Newington, Conn., contributes with: "continue along the road marked •health and happiness.' "
Congratulations to Art Boggs on acquiring a new wife, Hulda Neff, on November 10, 1969. Art has indeed had a varied career all the way from India to his present location in Portland, Ore. The same goes for Zeke Carpenter who, with his new bride, recently returned from a Christmas cruise through the Caribbean and a few of the Islands there, ending up at Palm Beach where they were to remain before returning to Marlboro Country about the middle of February.
This scribe received a Christmas card on January 21 from Chuck Ingram out in Tacoma, Wash., said card post-marked December 15, 1969. Good old Uncle Sam! And a note from George Macomber '20 refers to a letter from this scribe dated January 22, 1969 regarding "The Dartmouth Handbook" which, according to my records, was mailed to him way back and apparently never received. Again - good old Uncle Sam!
Notes from hither and yon: Mrs. Stan Llewellyn, down in Camden, S. C., is remindful that "the Llewellyn" door is always open to Stan's friends with whom he was very close. "Wish we could make it!" And a card from the Howie Fullers reports fine weather down in South Florida "with sunshine." Tony Simoneau reports that even though cold weather down at Isle of Palms halted his swimming he gets his exercise swinging the axe and pushing the saw to furnish wood for the fireplace. Doc Noyes spends a good part of his time calling on sick people and those confined to nursing homes. On one such occasion, much to his surprise, the hostess called for quiet, mentioned it was his birthday, whereupon the girl at the piano played "Happy Birthday" with everyone joining - whereupon a photographer came up and took his picture. Not a bad way to have one's birthday remembered! Doc comes up with some good ones - such as the one about the lady wearing a mini-skirt while she plays the cello and should wear it side-saddle rathered than astride! Space doesn't permit further quotes from his pen - at this sitting.
A late New Year note from Eben Clough reports that wife Margie came through a serious operation successfully and, at last report, was well on the road to full recovery. Eben's description of his activity as a housekeeper is "one for the books." Dish washer, furniture mover, duster, sweeper - his description of how he handles a household, without the guidance of his good wife, is indeed illuminating. According to Eben, Margie's instructions are: " 'Swish the dry mop around and keep the fuzzy down.' I dust out of the way every chance I get. I always thought 'antipeanult' meant to toss another chip on the table. If I live long enough, I'll learn." A re-cap of his offerings would fill a complete column - not all of which would get by the censor!
A further report from Art Sterling who, amongst other interests, is quite a baseball fan, says they are not heading South by trailer this year for the exhibition games, but will probably depend on charter buses. They have enjoyed such trips to Montreal, Nova Scotia, the Smoky Mts. in Asheville, N. C., and have in mind a possible trip to Bryce and Zion National Parks, Grand Canyon and Las Vegas this year. In the meantime, he's still a Cub fan even though "they faltered out to your Mets last year." Nothing like a loyal rooter, Art!
At last report, George Martin was scheduled to fly down to Coral Gables along midFebruary and also spend some time in Sarasota before heading back North.
And just to prove that this scribe is getting back into real circulation again, we (editorial "we") perambulated some two miles recently under normal foot-power without noticeable strain! That about winds up Class news at this sitting. "Keep the pot a-boilin!"
