Don McMichael '53, new social chair- man, scored a triumph with the guest speaker at our first fall luncheon. "McMichael bribed me to come," asserted Bob Martin, radio-TV sports director and personality. Kicking off the topic of football, he slipped in a reference to Illinois' scoreless status as of that date. It was a spirited meeting. (Whatever McMichael's tactics, 'he's the man for the job.)

A newcomer was Alfred J. McSwain '38, who recently arrived in town with much of the responsibility for the immense move to Denver of the Johns-Manville Corporation. McMichael, along with Treasurer Bob Jeavons '48, solved a long-nagging problem: where to hold the luncheons at a reasonable price and still enjoy a good meal together. Now any visitor to Denver can find us on the last Friday of the month at the Downtowner Motor Inn. Cost, $3.50. Jeavons has instituted an elective package plan of $25.50 plus dues for all the luncheons at a discount.

In late August, the alumni held a stag picnic in honor of returning undergraduates and this year's 17 freshmen. The picnic is traditionally held at the Grants' ranch southwest of the city. The generous Mrs. Grant, widow of Ned Grant '30, continues to welcome this annual descent of Dartmouth men. She assisted Pete Wells '56 and President Bob Montgomery '56, who put the picnic together. John Ratigan '61 was delegated the difficulties of staging an outdoor movie of "Football Highlights." The rest of the evening was spontaneous—grads vs. undergrads in softball, fast-balls by Dr. JackJacobey '51, and later grand old ragtime as Len Tobias '41 switched his talents from steaks to the piano.

Earlier in the summer, there was a reception for undergraduates, new freshmen and their parents, alumni and their wives. Now, with 11 applications already, Ratigan and his committee are working on our contingent to the Class of 1976.
