A recent issue of "Newsweek" featured John Truxal's new course in science education entitled "The Man-Made World." John, academic vice-president of Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute and Dr. Edward E. David, science adviser to President Nixon, have put together this course in an attempt (in John's words) "build a greater level of technical literacy in our general nonscientific population."
From Burlingame Calif., Jim Eckels writes: "Busy in the Bay area. Have recently seen Ed McCrum, Art Nichols and Bud Elder. Have spent an active winter, including skiing in the Sierras with wife and two teen-age daughters, Joanne, 17 and Marilee, 15. Also spent a weekend in Hanover in January visiting son John '74."
Word has been received of the death of George Baker on February 8. Our sympathy is extended to his wife Edith and daughter Joan Marie.
This is Alumni Fund time and AlUngar, Frank Hutchins, Geoff Maclay and their assistant agents are hard at work to achieve the '45's goal of $40,720. In Al's words, "Moose Rowan's act as class agent for our 25th reunion ($45,000 contributed by our class) is a tough one to follow, but as everyone is aware, the needs are even greater today than last year. And in my words, Dartmouth desperately needs our continued and increased support to maintain her position in the field of undergraduate, liberal arts, non-state-supported education. Bruce Symonds, director of marketing and sales for the Feed Division of Hubbard Milling Co. in Mankato, Minn., has been elected president of the north central chapter of the National Agricultural Advertising and Marketing Association. Before joining Hubbard Milling three years ago, he had been advertising and market research director at Ralston Purina. Bruce is married to the former Jane Cadbury, a pediatrician. Their son, Bill, is a member of the Dartmouth class of 1973. They have two other children, Ann and Robert.
Art Backer has been promoted to the post of executive secretary of the Pacific Fire Rating Bureau. Art entered the insurance business with the firm in San Francisco in '48 and has been executive chief examiner since 1960.
As a result of the successful Alumni Ski Weekend held in Hanover this past winter, there is now planned an Alumni Golf and Tennis Weekend in Hanover the long holiday weekend of July 4. The plan includes lodging at the Inn, golf, tennis, swimming, and good fellowship. Reservations may be made by writing Golf and Tennis Weekend, 203 Crosby Hall, Hanover.
