Bob Hage, director of the college's office of financial aid sends the following memo to '45s: "I have just made a special award of $500 from the Class of 1945 Memorial Fund to Gary E. Gipson, a senior, who is spending the winter term in Africa on Dartmouth's foreign study program. Gipson is one of the most outstanding blacks on campus. He has the distinction of be- ing a senior fellow and his fellowship project includes research in this country and Africa. The College is taking care of the additional expenses of the African term in the normal way, but while he is there, he is traveling to different parts of West Africa to visit libraries. He has come up with what I believe is a reasonable budget of $500 for travel and daily living expenses while he is away from the Dartmouth foreign study base in Freetown, Sierra Leone... On behalf of the College, I want to thank you for providing the funds which made it possible for us to give Gary Gipson some special assistance." This '45 Memorial Fund is of course made possible by those classmates who send their yearly class dues to Harry Hampton - for those of you who don't indulge, why not join us and do something concrete to help today's undergraduates!?!
