Rosemont Plantation, the boyhood home of Jefferson Davis was sold in April to a Texas attorney who has bought and restored several historic homes in both Texas and New York State. Plans call for a long-range complete restoration project of both the home and plantation as a memorial to the first and only President of the Confederate States of America The property will be restored to the condition it was in at the time of Davis' residency there, during the early 1800's.
Directing the restoration program will be Ernie Caldeira. Ernie is a former television producer, who for a number of years was connected with the well known program, "Search for Tomorrow." He became interested in the restoration of historic sites and resigned his network position to make this his life's work. He has restored several buildings in New York State. His basic plan for Rosemont is to make it a replica of a "working plantation" of the early ante-bellum era of southern history, as opposed to the usual type of museum or guided-tour mansion normally opened to the public with roped off areas. In other words, his hope is to make it appear to the visitor that as he drives down the long, narrow moss-hung lane leading to the home he will be leaving the present era and visiting instead a typical southern plantation of the early 19th Century.
