According to the 1971 Alumni Directory, 4,448 alumni live in Massachusetts. This is the second largest geographical distribution of alumni, the first being New York with 5,072. These two states each have far more Dartmouth men living in them than either third place California with 2,493 or fourth place Connecticut with 2,268. Least populated is North Dakota with only 22.
We are pleased to report that HopHolmberg has recently done his bit to help Massachusetts gain on New York. He, his wife, Judy, and their two children moved to Newtonville from Washington, D. C. Hop is now the executive director of the Boston-Brookline Health Resources Organization. BBHRO aims to bring better medical care to lower-income people. Hop has interesting ideas on such subjects as making hospitals more efficient, training para-medical personnel, and developing a national health insurance program. Since few of us are knowledgeable about the health care needs of this country, perhaps Hop would like to share his experience and thoughts with us in a full-length Alumni Magazine article or write a summary of his ideas for this column.
Dick Welty, whose fine voice provided the Glee Club, the Injunaires and Alpha Theta with many superb solos, has settled with his wife Billie in Fishkill, N. Y. Dick specializes in selling general lines insurance for the Aetna Insurance Company. He is secretary-treasurer of the Mid-Hudson Dartmouth Club. It has about 40 members now and Dick is working hard to expand the membership. He mentioned that MikeHoulahan is presently a cultural affairs officer at the United States Embassy in Wellington, New Zealand. There must be some interesting things going on in that remote corner of the world, so we hope Mike will write in and tell us about them.
So far this has been a most unusual winter in Massachusetts. One day it will be 20 degrees and snowing, the next day it will be 50 degrees and bare earth. After enduring several weeks of vacillating weather" it was therapeutic to talk with someone living in a land of constant weather. Carl Zeisse resides in San Diego where he is a physicist working for the Navy in an electronics laboratory. He and his wife Donna are enjoying their first child, three-month old Zachery. When he's not busy at the lab or at home, Carl has a great choice of leisure activities ranging from body surfing at splendid beaches to cross country skiing in Yosemite National Park. (The longer we talked with Carl, the more we thought maybe Hop Holmberg's contribution to the Massachusetts Dartmouth population might be offset by a surge of transfers to sunny Southern California!)
If you have not already done so, please send in your class dues to Hank Eberhardt. His address is at the top of this column. These dues are needed to meet various class expenses, particularly your subscription to the Alumni Magazine. Let it never be said that the Class of 1961 couldn't pay its bills! Send in your dues today!
