John Benisch, who is a vice president of Cross & Brown Company, has been elected a trustee of the East New York Savings Bank, Brooklyn. His grandfather was also a trustee of the bank for 41 years. John joined Cross & Brown in 1961, having been an officer in the Navy and then associated with Mobil Oil. He and wife Muriel and their four children, Susan, Loel, Diane, and John, live in Plandome, Long Island.
Ed Bessey has been appointed vice president, director of operations of Pfizer Laboratories Division, Pfizer Pharmaceuticals. He joined Pfizer in 1964 as a marketing assistant, and after a field assignment, returned to New York headquarters and was named assistant product manager in 1965. In 1967, he was appointed product manager; in 1968, group product manager; and in 1970, vice president, market. He and wife Jill with sons Michael and Peter are New York City dwellers.
Fred Searby has been named managing partner of the Cleveland office of McKinsey & Company, Inc., international management consultants. His appointment involved a move to Cleveland from Paris where he specialized in top management problems having to do with finance and strategic options, and where he was responsible for the firm's practice in Algeria and Spain.
A recent tombstone ad in the Wall Street Journal announced the opening of the New York office of Blunt Ellis & Simmons, Inc., under the management of Robert Holland, vice president. Bob's new company is a Chicago-based regional research firm specializing in companies located in the Midwest. Bob was formerly associated with Hornblower & Weeks—Hemphill, Noyes.
Howland Keller has been appointed assistant secretary of the Insurance Company of North America. Howie joined INA in 1961 and served in various underwriting and managerial positions in Boston and New York before returning to corporate headquarters in 1967 as regional director, marine and aviation. A graduate of Harvard Law School, Howie is a member of the Philadelphia Foreign Traders Association and the American Institute of Marine Underwriters.
Peter Buswell has joined the corporate financial department of F.S. Moseley & Co., in New York. Pete writes: "I spent three and a half years with Gregory & Sons which went belly-up, and then was with E. A. Saxton where we did three public offerings. Moseley is an excellent house based in Boston and business looks awfully good."
Alan Shapiro is a vice president and one of three founders of Bio-Design, Inc., based in Stoughton, Mass. Bio-Design makes electrical safety equipment for hospitals, and Al's principal responsibility is equipment design. He reports that the usual pangs of getting a new enterprise off the ground are finally gone and that operations are now in the black.
An interesting note from Chris Wren reads as follows: "Thought I might send up a smoke puff as to what has happened since Look went under. After moving to Washington a year ago to run the Look bureau there, we finally bought a house the day before Look's closing was announced— without warning, needless to say. We've since sold it and moved back to New York (our fourth move in a year). I am currently a general editor in the national affairs section of Newsweek.
"Among the few highlights since our hapless move to Washington was the news some months ago that my last coverage in Look of the Vietnamese army in Cambodia and Vietnam won a citation of excellence from the Overseas Press Club for the best reporting from Asia in any medium."
