A long letter has arrived from Harry Barnett telling of his doings over the past few years. These included a trip to the Canadian Rockies, to his high school reunion in St. Johnsbury, Vt., to St. Louis, Eisenhower's birthplace, Grand Canyon and Yellowstone Park, to St. Petersburg and Fort Lauderdale, and to the Caribbean and South America, and again to Vermont last year. All this interspersed with visits to the hospital for a recurring malignancy. Says he still feels fine and occupies the summers with his garden in Ann Arbor where he and Doris moved from East Lansing eight years ago. In 1967 he began reading archeology, putting together the findings with the Bible story and winding up with "History and the Bible." He has reviewed books on the Negro problem at Church men's luncheons. The sad part is that with several other handicaps from advancing years he feels he cannot join us in June. His last 1912 reunion was the 55th in 1967.
The Clarks are in the news again! Fletcher is now in his 51st year as Moderator of the Town of Middleborough, Mass. It is said that his spry, dapper, dignified appearance belies his 81 years. His list of accomplishments and activities is a long one. His recommendation to his successor, should he ever retire as moderator, is to possess patience. The other Clark, Syd, has just published his 21st 'or more' "All the Best In" books and for this occasion he was honored by the Vienna Tourist Board at the Plaza Hotel in New York City on February 18, 1972. The Austria volume contains a chapter on Munich and the 1972 Olympics beginning August 28, interesting reading particularly if you've ever visited Munich. Syd reports showing up at the Cape Cod Dartmouth Club luncheons each month. His chances of making our 60th are complicated a bit by his wife's illness. Hope he comes.
Talked to Eddie Luitwieler the other day and learn that he too is using a cane and has had to give up driving his car. Gertrude's health is not good, so Eddie is pretty well tied down. He reports that Ev Gammons had a fall for which he had to be hospitalized and that Jimmie Cleaves is now in a rest home in New Hampshire. Batch Waterbury's annual appeal for the Bequest and Estate Planning Program has been received. If you haven't made a bequest to the College or arranged for it in your will, do it now. It's later than you think! Dutch reports Jim and Carola Steen enjoying Arizona weather where Jim can be more active. The Waterburys and Steens are looking forward to our 60th. And speaking of that event, Katie Baker and Hal are planning on being on hand, she to handle the organ for our Memorial Service and the piano for our sings. The Bakers have moved into the Baptist Home of Ohio at 1801 Chestnut Hills Drive, Cleveland. The setup sounds very cheerful as they have a corner apartment on the second floor, looking out into treetops over a beautiful section of the town.
Two more have left us, Charles Fisher on January 21 of this year and Basil O'Connor on March 9.
